On October 17, 2025, India marked a significant milestone in its defence sector with the successful maiden flight of the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) facility in Nashik. The event was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who also inaugurated HAL’s third production line for the Tejas and the second line for the Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT)-40, underscoring India’s growing commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

A Leap Towards Indigenous Defence Technology
The Tejas Mk1A is a fourth-generation multirole fighter designed to perform air superiority, ground attack, and maritime operations. With over 50% indigenous components, the aircraft represents India’s strides toward self-reliance in defence technology. Its advanced avionics suite includes the Israeli EL/M-2052 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, an enhanced electronic warfare system with a self-protection jammer, and Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile capabilities. The fighter also features a fully digital fly-by-wire control system and supports mid-air refuelling, enhancing its operational range and endurance.
Expanding Production Capacity
HAL’s inauguration of a third production line in Nashik significantly boosts the annual production of Tejas aircraft. With 24 units expected per year—16 from Bengaluru and 8 from Nashik—this expansion accelerates deliveries to the Indian Air Force (IAF), which is actively replacing its aging MiG-21 fleet. The first Tejas Mk1A aircraft is slated for delivery to the IAF by the end of October 2025, highlighting the rapid pace of indigenous fighter development.
Strategic Importance for the Indian Air Force
The induction of Tejas Mk1A jets is crucial for the IAF, which currently operates 29 fighter squadrons, well below its sanctioned strength of 42. The modern fighter will enhance combat readiness, reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, and strengthen India’s defence capabilities. As a multirole platform, Tejas Mk1A is expected to play a pivotal role in modernising the IAF fleet, ensuring preparedness to face future security challenges.
The MGMM Outlook
India’s defence sector has taken a significant leap forward with the successful maiden flight of the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft from HAL’s Nashik facility on October 17, 2025. This achievement not only showcases India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing but also reflects the country’s commitment to technological innovation. The Tejas Mk1A, a fourth-generation multirole fighter with over 50% indigenous components, is equipped with advanced avionics, including the Israeli EL/M-2052 AESA radar, an enhanced electronic warfare system, and BVR missile capabilities. Its fully digital fly-by-wire system and mid-air refuelling support ensure enhanced operational range and versatility, marking a clear step forward in India’s pursuit of a modern, capable air force.
The expansion of HAL’s production capacity, with the inauguration of the third Tejas line in Nashik, signals a focused effort to strengthen India’s defence preparedness. With 24 aircraft expected annually across Bengaluru and Nashik, the rapid induction of Tejas Mk1A jets will help replace the aging MiG-21 fleet and bolster the Indian Air Force’s operational readiness. This development also reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthens India’s strategic autonomy, ensuring that the nation is better equipped to meet emerging security challenges while reinforcing its position as a technologically capable and self-reliant defence power.
