Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's Nashik Plant Approaches Completion of Tejas Mk1A Jets

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Nasik plant is progressing towards becoming the third production line for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A. Sources close to the project told India Today that work at the facility is moving ahead swiftly, with the infrastructure nearly complete and machinery installation underway to make the production line fully operational.

The LCA Mk1A, an upgraded version of the Tejas fighter aircraft, has been highly anticipated by the Indian Air Force (IAF), which is facing a shortage in squadron strength. The aircraft features advanced avionics, an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, sophisticated electronic warfare systems, and quicker maintenance turnaround times—key enhancements for modern aerial combat.

The LCA Mk1A, an advanced version of the Tejas fighter aircraft, has been eagerly awaited by the Indian Air Force (IAF), which is grappling with a dwindling squadron strength.

Sources confirmed that the Nasik production line is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2025, with clearer delivery timelines expected by April 2025. This line will complement the two existing production lines in Bengaluru, with each expected to produce eight LCA Mk1A aircraft annually, significantly strengthening the IAF's combat capabilities.

Despite facing delays due to supply chain issues, especially in securing engines from the United States, HAL is ensuring the timely completion of its production infrastructure to avoid further setbacks once the supply chain challenges are addressed.

In addition to the LCA Mk1A, the Nasik plant plays a key role in the production and upgrading of the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI, a cornerstone of the IAF’s fleet. This dual focus highlights the importance of HAL Nasik in enhancing India’s air defense capabilities.

The arrival of LCA Mk1A aircraft is particularly significant for the IAF, which is grappling with a diminishing number of fighter squadrons. Alongside the LCA Mk1A, efforts are ongoing to procure 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) from international suppliers to meet the IAF’s operational needs.

In February 2021, the IAF signed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for 83 Mk1A fighters, including 73 single-seater jets and 10 twin-seater trainers. Deliveries are expected to commence by 2025, with full-scale production supported by HAL's Bengaluru and Nasik facilities.
