India’s Pioneering Step in Green Rail Transport: PM Modi to Inaugurate First Hydrogen Train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off the country’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train from Jind railway station in Haryana on July 17, 2026. This landmark event highlights India’s growing focus on sustainable mobility and innovative clean energy solutions in the railway sector.
The introduction of this train marks a significant advancement for Indian Railways as it explores alternative propulsion technologies beyond traditional diesel and electric systems. The hydrogen train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, serving as a pilot project that could pave the way for wider adoption of zero-emission rail services.

Technical Specifications and Operational Details
The 10-coach trainset consists of two Driving Power Cars and eight passenger coaches. It is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system delivering a total of 2,400 kW, making it one of the most powerful hydrogen trains operating on a broad-gauge network globally. The train has a seating capacity of 682 and can accommodate up to approximately 2,600 passengers.
During regular operations, it will cover the 89-kilometre distance between Jind and Sonipat in about two hours, halting at 12 intermediate stations. The service is planned to run two round trips daily, covering a total of 356 km. While the maximum operational speed on this route is 75 kmph, the train has successfully completed high-speed trials reaching up to 120 kmph.
Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction combining stored hydrogen with oxygen from the air. The only by-products are water vapour and heat, ensuring zero tailpipe emissions. An indigenous hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling facility has been established at Jind to support seamless operations, with safety features including leak detectors and flame monitoring systems.
Development Under Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme
The hydrogen train launch forms part of a larger infrastructure push. Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate the redeveloped Jind railway station and a new medical college under the Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme. Additionally, he will dedicate an elevated railway track and renovated station in Kurukshetra, along with laying the foundation stone for a Sikh museum in the city.
Under the same scheme, four more stations in the Ambala Division — Mohali, Amb Andaura, Anandpur Sahib, and Kalka — will be inaugurated. Later in the day, the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate various infrastructure projects at Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh before proceeding to Jalandhar in Punjab.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme focuses on the comprehensive redevelopment of stations across the country with modern passenger amenities, improved connectivity, and long-term urban integration. Jind and Sonipat stations are among those being upgraded to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
