India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train: A Milestone in Green Rail Mobility

Indian Railways has achieved a significant breakthrough in sustainable transportation by approving the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell-based passenger train. This innovative train is set to operate on the Jind-Sonepat route in Haryana, representing a major step forward in the nation’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy solutions in the railway sector.

Project Overview and Technical Features
The 10-coach hydrogen train, developed indigenously at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, features a powerful 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. It is designed to reach a maximum speed of 75 kmph and can accommodate around 2,600 passengers. As a retrofitted Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU), the train stands out as one of the most powerful and longest hydrogen-powered trains in its category on broad gauge tracks globally.
The Jind-Sonepat section, spanning approximately 89 km, has been chosen as the ideal pilot route. This non-electrified or partially electrified corridor provides an excellent testing ground for the new technology. Trials have already demonstrated promising results, with the train successfully completing test runs at speeds up to 70 kmph.
Green Hydrogen Infrastructure
Supporting the train’s operations is a dedicated green hydrogen production and refuelling facility established at Jind. The facility includes a 1-MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser capable of generating around 430 kg of green hydrogen daily. It also features a storage capacity of approximately 3,000 kg of compressed hydrogen. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has provided necessary approvals, while advanced safety systems such as leak detection mechanisms ensure secure operations.
This infrastructure not only powers the pilot train but also lays the foundation for future expansions of hydrogen-based rail services.
Environmental Benefits and Strategic Importance
Hydrogen fuel cell technology offers a clean and efficient alternative for rail transport. The system generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapour being the only emission. This zero-emission capability at the point of use makes the train far more environmentally friendly compared to conventional diesel-powered trains.
The project aligns with Indian Railways’ broader vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 and supports the country’s national goal of reaching net-zero by 2070. By reducing dependence on diesel, it is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions and operational costs over time. Moreover, it positions India among a select group of countries actively developing hydrogen rail technology, including Germany, Japan, China, and the United States.
Future Outlook and Expansion Plans
Under the “Hydrogen for Heritage” initiative, Indian Railways aims to introduce around 35 such hydrogen-powered trains, particularly on heritage, hill, and tourist routes where full electrification may be challenging. Each train is estimated to cost approximately ₹80 crore, with additional infrastructure expenses of around ₹70 crore per route.
The successful implementation of this pilot project is anticipated to serve as a blueprint for wider adoption across India’s vast railway network. It reflects the country’s commitment to innovation, energy self-reliance, and sustainable development in the transportation sector.
