India and Belgium have inaugurated a new era in their bilateral relations with the launch of the India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue. This high-level mechanism aims to provide a structured and comprehensive framework for sustained political engagement and practical cooperation between the two nations.
The inaugural meeting, held in Brussels on July 15, was co-chaired by India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, Maxime Prévot. The dialogue is firmly anchored within the broader India-European Union Strategic Partnership, reflecting shared ambitions in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Key Areas of Cooperation
During the meeting, both sides agreed to intensify collaboration across multiple strategic domains. These include trade and investment, green energy transition, innovation and technology, connectivity, defence and security, as well as regional and global issues. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening people-to-people exchanges to foster greater mutual understanding.
Dr. Jaishankar highlighted Belgium’s special place in India’s engagement with Europe. He noted that as bilateral ties deepen and the India-EU relationship gains strategic weight, the new dialogue will help harness complementarities and deliver tangible benefits for both countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Prévot recalled the success of the Belgian Economic Mission to India in March 2025, which demonstrated the strength and dynamism of existing economic links. He described trade, investment, and innovation as vital forces that continue to bring the two nations closer together.

The launch of the Strategic Dialogue was complemented by the India-EU Business Forum, held on the same day at the Federation of Belgian Enterprises. The forum convened business leaders from India, Belgium, and other European countries to explore concrete economic opportunities. Discussions focused particularly on advancing negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
The Indian delegation included Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada, alongside Dr. Jaishankar. Belgian representation featured Minister-President of Flanders Matthias Diependaele and Minister-President of Wallonia Adrien Dolimont.
This engagement forms part of Minister Goyal’s broader visit to Europe, which includes stops in Spain, Belgium, and Finland. Activities in Belgium featured visits to key hubs such as the Port of Antwerp and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, underscoring opportunities in logistics, gems and jewellery, sustainable technologies, and resilient supply chains.
Historical Foundations and Future Outlook
The relationship between India and Belgium dates back to September 1947, when Belgium was among the first European countries to establish diplomatic ties with independent India. Built on shared values of democracy, rule of law, federalism, and pluralism, the partnership has steadily grown in depth and diversity. Belgium has long supported India’s aspirations for greater responsibility in global governance, including permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.
The new Strategic Dialogue builds upon earlier ministerial commitments and aligns with the ambitious Towards 2030: A Joint India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda, adopted earlier this year. It signals a maturing partnership that extends beyond traditional economic cooperation into strategic, security, and technological domains.
