CP Radhakrishnan: NDA’s Vice-Presidential Nominee and Its Wider Political Message

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has officially declared C. P. Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra, as its candidate for the Vice-Presidential election scheduled on September 9, 2025. The decision was announced after a BJP parliamentary board meeting chaired by party president J. P. Nadda and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The nomination comes after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, which created an early vacancy in the office.

A Leader with a Clean Image

C. P. Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, is widely respected for his clean public image and calm approach to governance. Unlike several governors who have drawn criticism for political confrontation, Radhakrishnan has maintained cordial relations across party lines. Even leaders of opposition parties, including those from the DMK, have praised him as a fair-minded individual. This reputation has made his candidacy acceptable not only within the NDA but also in sections of the opposition.

From Tiruppur Roots to National Politics

Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan was first drawn into public life through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 17. His early years were marked by grassroots activism, followed by a rise in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tamil Nadu unit. He went on to serve as a two-term Member of Parliament from Coimbatore, earning recognition for his simple lifestyle and people-centric politics. Beyond electoral politics, he has held significant gubernatorial responsibilities, serving as the Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana (additional charge), and later Maharashtra, where he built a reputation for being a non-controversial administrator.

Strategic Significance of the Nomination

Radhakrishnan’s nomination is more than just a personal recognition. It reflects the BJP’s larger political strategy. As a member of the influential Kongu Vellala Gounder community, classified under the OBC category, his candidature is seen as part of the NDA’s efforts to strengthen its social coalition. His Tamil Nadu origins add further significance as the BJP attempts to expand its presence in the southern states, where it continues to face challenges from strong regional parties.

Additionally, Radhakrishnan enjoys goodwill beyond Tamil Nadu. His influence extends to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and even Maharashtra, where he has served as governor. This gives his candidacy a pan-Indian relevance that the NDA is keen to highlight in the run-up to the polls.

Political Support and Opposition Dilemma

The NDA’s numbers already ensure a comfortable victory in the vice-presidential election. However, Radhakrishnan’s unifying persona has brought additional support. The YSR Congress Party, with 11 MPs, has already pledged backing for his candidature, strengthening the NDA’s position further.

On the other hand, the opposition’s INDIA bloc, and particularly the DMK, face a strategic dilemma. The DMK, being from Radhakrishnan’s home state, must decide whether to oppose a Tamil Nadu-based nominee or accept the possibility of being seen as standing against one of their own. This division within the opposition underscores the tactical advantage the NDA has gained by selecting him.

Institutional Backing and Election Timeline

The BJP’s parliamentary board has pitched Radhakrishnan’s name as a consensus choice, with party leaders expressing hope that the opposition will avoid a contest. Prime Minister Modi has personally endorsed him, praising his decades of service, administrative skills, and clean image. The nomination process will close on August 21, and if required, the election will take place on September 9. Given the NDA’s strength, Radhakrishnan’s path to the vice-president’s office appears secure.

Conclusion

The NDA’s decision to nominate C. P. Radhakrishnan is both a recognition of his long-standing service and a carefully crafted political move. His clean image, non-confrontational style, and broad acceptance across party lines make him an ideal candidate for the second-highest constitutional office in the country. More importantly, his nomination reflects the NDA’s strategy to deepen its social and regional outreach, particularly in southern India.

If elected, Radhakrishnan will bring to the Vice-President’s chair not just experience and integrity but also a symbolic presence of inclusivity and balance. His rise from Tiruppur’s grassroots to the heart of India’s constitutional leadership is a story of quiet perseverance and political foresight—one that fits well with the NDA’s larger narrative of expanding its national footprint.
