On July 14, 2025, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated the Sigandur Bridge in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district. Spanning approximately 2.2 kilometers across the Sharavathi backwaters, this engineering marvel holds the distinction of being India’s second-longest cable-stayed bridge. The new bridge, connecting the villages of Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli in the Sagara taluk, is set to transform regional connectivity and bring substantial economic and social benefits to the Malnad region.

An Engineering Marvel of Modern India
The Sigandur Bridge was constructed at an estimated cost of ₹472 crore and showcases an advanced extradosed balanced-cantilever cable-stayed design — the first such structure in Karnataka. Its dual lanes and pedestrian walkways are supported by towering pylons that reach up to 90 meters high, designed to endure the climatic conditions of the Western Ghats. This bridge stands as a testimony to India’s growing capabilities in adopting cutting-edge engineering techniques to develop resilient and efficient infrastructure.
Not only does the bridge serve a critical functional purpose, but it also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding natural landscape, blending utility with aesthetic appeal. As a project managed under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), it forms part of the larger vision to enhance the nation’s transportation network.
Restoring Lost Connectivity and Boosting Pilgrimage
The significance of the Sigandur Bridge extends beyond its impressive structure. For decades, the region had lost its direct road connectivity when the Linganmakki dam’s construction in the 1960s led to the submergence of vital routes. Residents were left dependent on traditional coracles and ferries to cross the Sharavathi backwaters, modes of transport that were not only inconvenient but often dangerous. The need for a permanent, safe crossing became even more urgent after a tragic ferry accident that claimed over 20 lives.
With the bridge now in place, travel to the famous Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple, a revered pilgrimage site, has been dramatically simplified. What used to be a journey of more than two hours involving detours and ferry crossings can now be completed in under twenty minutes. This improvement is expected to invigorate religious tourism and open up new avenues for economic development in the region.
Political Dynamics Surrounding the Inauguration
While the inauguration marked a significant milestone, it was accompanied by political tensions. Notably, Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other senior state officials were absent from the event. The state government cited the late receipt of invitations as the reason for their non-participation. However, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari responded by clarifying that official invitations had been sent well in advance, with subsequent requests for remote attendance.
Despite these controversies, the event saw the presence of prominent leaders such as BJP veteran B.S. Yediyurappa and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. Their attendance underscored the central government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure projects in Karnataka as part of broader national initiatives like Bharatmala Pariyojana and Gati Shakti.
A Step Towards Regional Growth and Economic Development
The Sigandur Bridge is more than a mere crossing; it represents a vital lifeline for the people of Malnad. Farmers, traders, students, and pilgrims alike stand to benefit from enhanced mobility and safer passage. The bridge also forms a part of an ambitious infrastructure development program in Karnataka, which includes ongoing projects such as a four-lane corridor connecting Belagavi, Hungund, and Raichur, and upgrades to critical highways like Bengaluru–Chennai.
Minister Gadkari highlighted that over a thousand kilometers of national highways are being improved within the state to ensure seamless, all-weather connectivity. These projects aim to reduce travel time, ease congestion, and stimulate local economies, contributing significantly to Karnataka’s overall progress and integration with the rest of India’s rapidly developing transport grid.
Conclusion: A Symbol of Progress and Connectivity
The inauguration of the Sigandur Bridge marks a new chapter in India’s infrastructure journey, especially for the remote and scenic Malnad region. It symbolizes not just enhanced physical connectivity but also the promise of economic growth, improved safety, and social upliftment. This bridge stands as a shining example of how modern engineering, combined with focused governmental vision, can transform lives and landscapes.
As India marches towards its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy, infrastructure milestones such as the Sigandur Bridge will play a crucial role in bridging divides and fostering inclusive development for generations to come.
