The Union Cabinet has given its approval to a significant railway infrastructure project that will add third and fourth lines along the 403-kilometre stretch between Ghaziabad and Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. With an estimated investment of ₹14,926 crore, this initiative forms part of a broader ₹24,815 crore package that also includes multi-tracking in Andhra Pradesh. Together, the projects are expected to expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 601 kilometres and are targeted for completion by 2030-31, with the Ghaziabad–Sitapur section planned over a four-year timeline.

Addressing Capacity Constraints on a Vital Corridor
The Ghaziabad–Sitapur section serves as a crucial segment of the Delhi–Guwahati High Density Network. Currently operating as a double-line route, it is already handling traffic at 168% of its designed capacity. Without additional lines, this utilisation is projected to rise to 207%, leading to increased congestion and potential delays in both passenger and freight services. The addition of two new lines, which will contribute 859 kilometres of total track length, aims to enhance operational efficiency, improve service reliability, and support smoother movement across this busy northern-eastern corridor.
Route, Districts, and Infrastructure Highlights
The proposed lines will pass through several key districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Ghaziabad, Hapur, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri (and parts of Hardoi), and Sitapur. These areas are home to important industrial clusters specialising in machinery, electronics, pharmaceuticals, brassware, handicrafts, furniture, textiles, carpets, and power generation facilities such as the Roza thermal power plant.
To minimise disruption at heavily congested junctions, the project incorporates bypass routes around Hapur, Simbhaoli, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, and Sitapur. Six new stations — New Hapur, New Moradabad, New Rampur, New Bareilly, New Shahjahanpur, and New Sitapur — are planned along these bypass sections. This strategic alignment is designed to ensure faster and more efficient train operations while maintaining connectivity to existing stations.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Once completed, the expanded corridor is anticipated to accommodate an additional 35.72 million tonnes of freight traffic per annum, covering essential commodities such as coal, foodgrains, fertilisers, steel, and cement. This shift from road to rail is expected to generate annual logistics cost savings of approximately ₹2,877 crore. The project will also create substantial employment opportunities, generating around 274 lakh human-days during the construction phase.
From an environmental perspective, the initiative is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 128.77 crore kilograms, an impact comparable to planting over 5 crore trees. By promoting rail-based transportation, which is significantly more environment-friendly, the project supports broader goals of sustainable logistics and reduced fuel consumption.
Enhanced Connectivity for Passengers and Tourism
Beyond freight and industrial benefits, the upgraded network will improve passenger travel experiences and provide better access to several prominent religious and tourist destinations. These include Dudheshwarnath Temple, Garhmukteshwar Ganga Ghat, the Dargah Shah Wilayat Jama Masjid in Amroha, and Naimisharanya in Sitapur. The development is expected to contribute to smoother journeys and greater convenience for travellers in the region.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, noting that it represents a strong step towards strengthening railway connectivity and fostering regional development.
Alignment with National Infrastructure Goals
This project aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasises integrated multi-modal connectivity and coordinated infrastructure planning. It reflects ongoing efforts to modernise the railway network, enhance capacity on high-density routes, and support India’s growing economic and logistical needs.
The MGMM Outlook
The approval of the ₹14,926 crore expansion between Ghaziabad and Sitapur reflects a timely intervention in one of the country’s most overburdened rail corridors. With traffic already exceeding capacity limits, the addition of third and fourth lines signals a clear intent to move beyond reactive fixes toward long-term infrastructure resilience. By integrating bypass routes and new stations, the plan does more than just add tracks—it restructures movement across key industrial districts, ensuring that both freight and passenger trains can operate with greater reliability and reduced congestion. This kind of targeted expansion highlights how critical corridors are being prioritised to sustain the pace of economic activity.
At the same time, the project underscores a broader shift toward efficiency-driven and sustainable growth. The expected diversion of freight from road to rail not only lowers logistics costs but also contributes meaningfully to emission reduction, aligning infrastructure development with environmental responsibility. Improved access to religious and tourist destinations further broadens its social and cultural impact, making connectivity more inclusive. When seen alongside national initiatives like PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the expansion reflects a coordinated approach to building capacity that supports both economic momentum and long-term sustainability without over-reliance on existing strained systems.
