UIDAI Rolls Out Free Email Updates on Aadhaar App, Enhancing Digital Convenience

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a user-friendly feature in its official Aadhaar mobile application, allowing residents to add or update their email ID without visiting an enrolment centre. This service is being offered free of cost for a period of six months, from July 1 to December 31, 2026, marking a significant step towards simplifying Aadhaar-related services.

The initiative has received an enthusiastic response, with more than 2.5 lakh people updating their email addresses in just the first two days of its launch. By eliminating the need for physical visits and waiving the usual ₹75 fee exclusively for app-based updates, UIDAI aims to encourage wider participation in keeping Aadhaar records accurate and up to date.

Importance of Linking Email to Aadhaar

Linking an email address to one’s Aadhaar profile serves as more than a simple administrative update. It enables users to receive real-time notifications whenever an authentication request is made using their Aadhaar details. This added layer of transparency helps individuals stay informed about access to their identity information and supports timely responses to potential security concerns.

Furthermore, a verified email facilitates smoother delivery of important communications, including OTPs for authentication, updates on government schemes, and other official notifications. In an increasingly digital ecosystem, maintaining accurate contact details strengthens the overall efficiency and reliability of Aadhaar-enabled services.

How to Update Email ID Through the Aadhaar App

Residents can easily avail of this facility by downloading or updating the official Aadhaar App on their smartphones. The process is designed to be straightforward and secure. Users log in with their Aadhaar number and registered mobile details, navigate to the email update section, enter the desired email address, and complete verification through OTP. The update is typically processed within 30 days, with confirmation sent via SMS to the registered mobile number. Status can also be tracked on the UIDAI website or by calling the toll-free helpline 1947.

This self-service option is available on both Android and iOS platforms and forms part of UIDAI’s ongoing efforts to provide convenient digital solutions.

Broader Enhancements in the New Aadhaar App

The email update feature builds upon the capabilities of the revamped Aadhaar App, which replaced the earlier mAadhaar platform. Designed with a strong emphasis on privacy and user control, the new application allows selective sharing of information, enabling users to disclose only specific details such as name, age, or address as required, rather than full Aadhaar data.

Additional features include QR code-based verification for quick and secure identity checks, face authentication, biometric lock and unlock options, and the ability to view authentication history. The app also supports management of up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, making it particularly convenient for families. These improvements align with the principles of data minimisation and enhanced security, offering citizens greater confidence in managing their digital identity.

The MGMM Outlook

Keeping Aadhaar information updated has become increasingly important as more public and private services rely on digital identity verification. By introducing free email ID updates through the Aadhaar App for a limited period, UIDAI has removed both cost and accessibility barriers, encouraging citizens to maintain accurate records without the inconvenience of visiting enrolment centres. The feature not only simplifies the update process but also strengthens communication by enabling users to receive authentication alerts, OTPs, and other essential notifications directly through their registered email.

The expanded capabilities of the revamped Aadhaar App further reflect India's growing emphasis on secure, user-centric digital governance. Features such as selective data sharing, QR code verification, face authentication, biometric controls, and authentication history give individuals greater control over their personal information while enhancing privacy and security. Together, these improvements reinforce the government's broader vision of delivering efficient, transparent, and trusted digital public services that are both convenient and citizen-focused.
