The Legacy of the Temple

The Tripura Sundari Temple traces its origins back to 1501 AD when it was built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya of the Manikya dynasty. Set atop a small hillock shaped like a tortoise hump, the site is often called Kurma Peetha. According to legend, the king was guided by a divine vision of Aadishakti, which led to the temple’s construction. Within the sanctum lie two idols: the main five-foot idol of Goddess Tripura Sundari and a smaller idol, lovingly called Chhoto Ma or Goddess Chandi. Historical accounts suggest that the Tripura royals carried the smaller idol with them during battles and hunting expeditions for divine protection.

The Redevelopment Journey

The temple’s redevelopment marks a significant milestone in preserving ancient heritage while meeting the needs of modern devotees. The project, valued at around ₹52 crore, has added new facilities without compromising the sanctity of the sacred site. The complex now features a three-storey building that houses multipurpose halls, a Prasad distribution area, and numerous stalls for visitors. Dormitories for devotees, residential quarters for monks and volunteers, and improved accessibility features such as ramps and lifts have been integrated thoughtfully. A redesigned naatmandir, enhanced pathways, and landscaped surroundings bring a fresh vibrancy to the centuries-old site.

The Sacred Ponds and Environmental Efforts

The temple is surrounded by five sacred ponds, among which Kalyan Sagar holds particular significance. This lake is home to the endangered Bostami turtles, which are considered sacred by devotees. Recognising their ecological importance, the Tripura government recently sanctioned a detailed study to protect and conserve the species. The initiative highlights the temple’s unique role as not only a spiritual hub but also an ecological sanctuary.

Tourism, Faith, and Development

The redevelopment of the Tripura Sundari Temple is expected to significantly boost pilgrimage and tourism in the Northeast. The state government has already initiated the construction of the 51 Shakti Peethas Park nearby at Banduar, which will showcase replicas of all Shakti Peethas across India. This ambitious project is set to position Tripura as a major spiritual tourism destination, attracting devotees and tourists alike. The upgraded facilities are also likely to generate employment opportunities, strengthen the local economy, and improve cultural exchanges in the region.

A Temple Rooted in Tradition, Renewed for the Future

The challenge of preserving centuries-old spiritual heritage while integrating modern amenities has been met with careful planning. The redevelopment ensures that the temple retains its divine atmosphere and architectural grandeur while also making the complex more welcoming to a growing number of visitors. As the first rays of sunlight fall on the temple’s iconic dome each morning, the shrine now stands as a bridge between tradition and progress, faith and modernity.

The MGMM Outlook

The recently redeveloped Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur, Tripura, stands as a remarkable example of blending heritage preservation with modern development. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22, 2025, this 524-year-old shrine, revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, has undergone significant upgrades under the PRASHAD scheme. The renovation preserves the temple’s sanctity while providing world-class facilities for devotees, including multipurpose halls, dormitories, residential quarters for monks, and improved accessibility features. The redevelopment thoughtfully enhances the temple complex, including a redesigned naatmandir, landscaped surroundings, and upgraded pathways, ensuring that spiritual ambiance and historical legacy remain intact for pilgrims and visitors alike.

Beyond its religious significance, the temple now plays a vital role in ecological conservation and regional development. The five sacred ponds surrounding the complex, particularly Kalyan Sagar, are home to the endangered Bostami turtles, reflecting the temple’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to boost spiritual tourism, support local employment, and strengthen Tripura’s cultural presence nationally. With the construction of the 51 Shakti Peethas Park nearby, the state aims to position itself as a leading destination for faith-based tourism, merging devotion, heritage, and modern amenities in a harmonious and forward-looking vision.
