According to police and eyewitness accounts, Rath was returning home to Barasat in a white Scorpio SUV when motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted the vehicle around 10:15–10:30 PM. The attackers fired multiple rounds at close range, hitting Rath—who was seated in the front passenger seat—with three to four bullets, primarily in the head, chest, and abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby private nursing home but was declared brought dead. His driver, Buddhadeb Bera, sustained serious gunshot injuries and is undergoing treatment at a Kolkata hospital.

Investigators have described the attack as meticulously planned and execution-style. A four-wheeler with a fake number plate, reportedly stolen from faraway Siliguri, was used in the operation. Police recovered live rounds, empty cartridges, and other evidence from the scene. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) involving CID officers has been formed, and CCTV footage from the area is under scrutiny. Three individuals have already been detained for questioning.

Chandranath Rath, aged around 41–42, hailed from Chandipur in Purba Medinipur. A former Indian Air Force personnel with nearly two decades of service, he brought discipline and dedication to his role.
