Tawang to Host International Tourism Mart as India Invites Around 20 Countries, Including China
Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is set to take centre stage in India's efforts to promote the tourism potential of the Northeast, with the 14th International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026 scheduled to be held from October 27 to November 1. The event is being organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and is expected to bring together tourism representatives, tour operators, investors, travel-industry professionals and media from India and abroad.
Around 20 countries have been invited, including China. While participation from Chinese representatives has not yet been confirmed, the invitation has attracted attention because Tawang is located in the eastern sector of the India-China boundary and has been at the centre of China's territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh.

International Tourism Mart Returns to Tawang
The upcoming event will bring the International Tourism Mart back to Tawang after more than a decade. The district last hosted the tourism mart in 2013, when the second edition of the event was held there. The return of the programme provides an opportunity to once again place Tawang and the wider Northeast before an international tourism audience.
Preparations for the 2026 edition have already been underway. Officials have reviewed accommodation, transportation, security, venues and hospitality arrangements, while teams from the Ministry of Tourism and the state Tourism Department have inspected the Guwahati-Tawang route and various facilities in the district. The event is expected to create opportunities for tourism promotion, investment and sustainable economic activity in Arunachal Pradesh.
Showcasing Tawang's Culture and Natural Beauty
Tawang offers a distinctive combination of Himalayan landscapes, Buddhist heritage and Monpa culture. The region is home to the historic Tawang Monastery, while destinations such as Buddha Park, Panga Teng Tso Lake and surrounding mountain landscapes add to its appeal for cultural, nature and adventure tourism.
The visiting delegates are expected to experience several of these attractions as part of the programme. Such exposure could help international travel operators understand the tourism products available in Arunachal Pradesh and create greater visibility for destinations across the Northeast.
The International Tourism Mart is also intended to connect tourism businesses from the Northeast with international buyers and travel professionals. This can provide local hotels, homestays, tour operators, guides, handicraft producers and other tourism-linked businesses with opportunities to develop new partnerships and reach wider markets.
China Among the Invited Countries
China's inclusion on the invitation list has given this year's tourism event an additional dimension. Beijing claims Arunachal Pradesh and refers to the region as “Zangnan” or “South Tibet”, while India rejects that claim and maintains that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of the country.
However, the International Tourism Mart is primarily a tourism and trade event, and invitations have been extended to participating countries and tourism-industry stakeholders. Chinese government representatives have not traditionally attended such tourism events, although Chinese private tour operators have participated in previous editions. In 2018, private Chinese tourism representatives were among international participants at the tourism mart held in Agartala. The invitation therefore places the focus on tourism cooperation and international participation while bringing global attention to Tawang as a destination.
Strengthening the Northeast's Tourism Potential
The International Tourism Mart has been organised in different Northeastern states since 2013 with the broader objective of promoting the region as an international tourism destination. The 2025 edition was held in Gangtok, Sikkim, and attracted representatives and tourism-industry stakeholders from more than 19 countries.
The 2026 edition provides Arunachal Pradesh with an opportunity to highlight the Northeast's diversity beyond its traditional tourist circuits. Tawang's Buddhist heritage, indigenous culture, high-altitude landscapes and adventure opportunities can form part of a wider tourism narrative covering the region's eight states.
Improved connectivity is also supporting the region's tourism prospects. The Sela Tunnel has strengthened the all-weather road connection towards Tawang, while continued infrastructure and tourism development can make it easier for visitors to access destinations in the region.
A Significant Moment for Tawang
Holding an international tourism event in Tawang brings together two important aspects of Arunachal Pradesh: its considerable tourism potential and its position in a strategically important Himalayan region. The choice of Tawang is also significant because the district last hosted the tourism mart in 2013, making the 2026 event a return after more than a decade.
With international delegates expected to visit Tawang's cultural and natural attractions, the event can provide a valuable platform for local tourism businesses and communities. More importantly, it places the Northeast before a wider global audience and creates an opportunity to promote Arunachal Pradesh through its culture, heritage, landscapes and tourism experiences.
The MGMM Outlook
The International Tourism Mart 2026 in Tawang is set to provide a major platform for showcasing Arunachal Pradesh and the wider Northeast to an international tourism audience. With representatives and tourism stakeholders from around 20 countries invited, the event can highlight Tawang’s Himalayan landscapes, Buddhist heritage, Monpa culture and adventure tourism potential while creating opportunities for local hotels, homestays, tour operators, artisans and other businesses. Bringing the event back to Tawang after more than a decade also reinforces the growing focus on connecting the Northeast with global tourism markets.
The invitation extended to China has brought additional international attention to the event, particularly given Tawang’s location and the longstanding territorial differences between India and China. However, the central purpose of the mart remains tourism promotion, international engagement and economic opportunities for the region. With improved connectivity, including the Sela Tunnel, and continued development of tourism infrastructure, the event can help present Arunachal Pradesh as a distinctive destination while encouraging sustainable tourism, local entrepreneurship and greater international visibility for the Northeast.
