Deepak Kumar, the Kotdwar gym owner who shot into the national spotlight earlier this year after being referred to as “Mohammad Deepak”, has been arrested by Uttarakhand Police following a complaint by a local businessman. The arrest has drawn renewed attention because Deepak had earlier been publicly praised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who described him as a “symbol of love” following a January controversy.

According to police, businessman Sanjeev Tonk approached Kotdwar Kotwali on October 1, alleging that Deepak had abused, assaulted and threatened him following a disagreement that reportedly began on Facebook. The dispute allegedly escalated when Deepak confronted Tonk at his saree shop on Ganga Dutt Joshi Marg. Police subsequently registered a case and began investigating the allegations.

Police Examine CCTV Footage and Other Evidence

The case was initially registered under Sections 351(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police later said that CCTV footage, photographs and other material were examined during the investigation, following which additional provisions of the BNS were invoked.

Police said Deepak was arrested under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita as a preventive measure, citing apprehensions of a possible breach of peace. Authorities also carried out a flag march in the Kotdwar area as a precautionary measure amid concerns that the dispute could lead to tensions.

The allegations made by the complainant are still subject to investigation and legal proceedings. The arrest itself does not establish guilt, and the circumstances of the confrontation will have to be determined through the due legal process.

Dispute Reportedly Began Over a Facebook Comment

Reports indicate that the latest confrontation was linked to a disagreement that began on social media. According to police, the dispute followed a Facebook comment made by Tonk concerning a post related to the partial demolition of a mosque in Ujjain.

The disagreement allegedly moved from social media to the businessman’s saree shop, where Tonk accused Deepak of confronting him and issuing threats. Police are examining the available evidence to establish what happened during the encounter and the sequence of events leading to the complaint.

How Deepak Became ‘Mohammad Deepak’

Deepak's latest arrest has attracted considerable attention because of an earlier incident that turned him into a widely discussed figure on social media.

In January 2026, Deepak intervened during a confrontation involving an elderly Muslim shopkeeper in Kotdwar. The dispute reportedly concerned the use of the word “Baba” in the name of the shop. During the confrontation, Deepak identified himself as “Mohammad Deepak”, and a video of the incident subsequently went viral.

The incident generated a wider debate about religious identity, social harmony and the role of individuals intervening in sensitive local disputes. Deepak subsequently became known by the unusual name that had emerged during the confrontation.

Rahul Gandhi Had Praised Deepak as a ‘Symbol of Love’

The January incident also brought Deepak into contact with Rahul Gandhi. In February, Gandhi met him and publicly praised his conduct during the earlier controversy. Gandhi described Deepak in positive terms and presented his actions as an example of standing for unity and humanity. The Congress leader's meeting with Deepak subsequently became another significant part of the controversy surrounding the Kotdwar resident. Deepak also said after the meeting that Gandhi had expressed an interest in joining his gym.

The latest arrest has therefore brought renewed attention to Gandhi's earlier comments, particularly because the same person who was publicly presented as a symbol of harmony is now facing allegations in an unrelated confrontation with another businessman.

Current Case Is Separate From Earlier Controversy

Despite the public discussion connecting the two incidents, the latest case concerns a separate allegation. The January controversy involved Deepak's intervention in a dispute involving a Muslim shopkeeper, while the present case arose from a complaint by businessman Sanjeev Tonk.

Police are now investigating the latest allegations independently. The evidence collected during the investigation, including CCTV footage and other material cited by authorities, will be examined as part of the legal process.

The development also highlights how individuals who become prominent through viral social-media controversies can remain under public scrutiny long after the original incident has ended. In Deepak's case, the latest police action has once again brought his name into the national conversation.

The MGMM Outlook

The arrest of Deepak Kumar in Kotdwar has brought renewed attention to a man who earlier gained national recognition after intervening in a local dispute and being described by Rahul Gandhi as a “symbol of love.” The latest case, however, relates to a separate complaint filed by businessman Sanjeev Tonk, who alleged that Deepak abused, assaulted and threatened him following a disagreement that reportedly began on Facebook. Police have examined CCTV footage and other evidence, while additional legal provisions were invoked during the investigation.

The development also highlights the need to distinguish between public perception created by viral incidents and the facts established through due legal process. Deepak’s earlier controversy and his meeting with Rahul Gandhi have become part of the public discussion surrounding the arrest, but the present allegations will have to be examined independently. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings will establish the circumstances of the incident and determine the outcome according to law.
