Russia Reaffirms Strong Energy Partnership with India Amid Global Challenges

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has extended firm assurances to India regarding the continued and uninterrupted flow of energy supplies from Russia. Speaking in an interview with RT India ahead of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Lavrov emphasised that Moscow remains fully committed to honouring its agreements with New Delhi, even as geopolitical tensions and external pressures mount on global energy markets.

Lavrov stated that India’s interests concerning Russian energy supplies would not be adversely affected. He highlighted Russia’s consistent track record of reliability, noting that the country has never failed to meet its obligations to India in the energy sector.

Lavrov’s Key Assurances on Energy Security

The Russian Foreign Minister criticised what he described as unfair competition and attempts by external actors to disrupt established energy trade routes. He pointed to risks around critical maritime chokepoints, including the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb, where conflicts have already led to supply disruptions and elevated global oil prices. Despite these challenges, Lavrov expressed confidence that bilateral arrangements between Russia and India would remain protected.

He praised India’s independent approach to energy procurement, underlining that New Delhi has the sovereign right to choose its suppliers based on national interests. This stance has enabled India to secure stable and cost-effective energy resources, contributing to domestic energy security and helping moderate fuel prices for consumers.

Surge in Russian Oil Imports Supporting India’s Needs

India, which imports more than 85 percent of its crude oil requirements, has significantly increased purchases from Russia in recent months. Amid disruptions in traditional West Asian supplies, Russian crude accounted for a substantial share of India’s imports, reaching record levels in March 2026. Volumes touched approximately 2.2–2.3 million barrels per day under temporary arrangements, helping the country manage elevated international oil prices.

These imports have played a vital role in diversifying India’s energy basket and ensuring steady availability of petroleum products. Russia has also continued supplies of coal and other hydrocarbons, further strengthening the energy cooperation framework between the two nations.

Expanding Cooperation in Nuclear Energy and Defence

Energy ties extend well beyond oil and gas. The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu stands as a cornerstone of bilateral nuclear collaboration. Units 1 and 2 are operational, while Units 3 and 4 have made significant progress, with recent milestones such as reactor flushing and spillage activities bringing them closer to commissioning. Discussions continue on additional units, small modular reactors, and greater localisation of technology and fuel.

Defence and strategic cooperation further deepen the partnership. Joint ventures such as the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile programme, licensed production of AK-203 rifles and T-90 tanks in India, and alignment with the country’s self-reliance goals demonstrate the multifaceted nature of the relationship. Both sides continue to explore opportunities in emerging areas such as green energy and advanced technologies.
