Prime Minister Modi's Vision for AI: Highlights of the GPAI Summit

Introduction

On the historic day of December 12, 2023, the vibrant city of New Delhi witnessed a momentous event as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit at the grand Bharat Mandapam. The summit, a collaborative effort involving 29 member countries, marked India's ascendancy to the lead chair position in GPAI for the year 2024.


The GPAI initiative, conceived in 2020 with India as one of the founding members, aims to bridge the gap between the theoretical underpinnings of artificial intelligence and its practical applications. It seeks to propel advanced research and applied activities in AI-related priorities, positioning nations at the forefront of the global AI landscape. India, being the incoming Support Chair, was proud to host the Annual GPAI Summit from December 12 to 14, 2023, signaling its commitment to shaping the future of AI.



Diverse Sessions 

The summit provided a kaleidoscope of sessions, covering an array of topics ranging from AI's impact on global health and education to the critical issues of data governance. An insightful Machine Learning (ML) Workshop was also on the agenda, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted dimensions of artificial intelligence. These sessions provided a platform for experts and thought leaders from over 50 GPAI member countries to engage in meaningful discussions, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.


AI Game Changers, Research Symposium, and Awards

The summit wasn't just about discussions; it was a celebration of innovation and excellence in the AI domain. The AI Game Changers Award recognized top contributors in the field, with global giants such as Intel, Google, Meta, and AWS leading the pack. The Research Symposium, a hallmark of the summit, showcased cutting-edge research from around the world, pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve.


Global Participation and Industry Giants

With more than 150 speakers and experts participating, the summit truly became a melting pot of diverse perspectives and ideas. The active involvement of industry giants such as Reliance Jio, Microsoft, Mastercard, and others underscored the significance of the event in shaping the future trajectory of AI on a global scale.
