Normalizing Conversations Around Mental Health

PM Modi called for creating an environment where open dialogue about mental health becomes mainstream. He noted that in today’s fast-paced world, individuals often suffer silently due to the stigma surrounding mental health issues. By encouraging collective efforts, he stressed the importance of normalizing conversations, reducing stigma, and promoting a culture of empathy and support. The Prime Minister also appreciated the work of those dedicated to mental health care, acknowledging their role in helping individuals find hope, healing, and happiness.

Government Initiatives to Support Mental Health

The Indian government has implemented several programs to strengthen mental health support nationwide. The Tele-MANAS program, launched in 2022, provides 24/7 mental health counseling in multiple languages, reaching over 2.3 million people so far. Meanwhile, the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) operates in over 700 districts, offering services through psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses. Efforts are also underway to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare centers through the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which now provide cashless services for 22 mental health procedures under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). These initiatives aim to make mental health care accessible to all, particularly during times of crisis.

Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies

Aligning with this year’s World Mental Health Day theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the need to provide psychological support to individuals affected by humanitarian crises. Collaborative efforts involving government officials, healthcare providers, community groups, and schools are critical in addressing these challenges effectively and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive timely care.

The MGMM Outlook

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on World Mental Health Day 2025, emphasized that mental well-being is as crucial as physical health. Highlighting issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress, he urged society to respond with empathy and understanding, stressing that even small acts of compassion can profoundly impact individuals facing mental health challenges. By advocating for open dialogue, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of breaking societal stigma around mental health, encouraging communities to create supportive environments where people can speak freely about their struggles and seek help without fear or judgment. His message also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of mental health professionals who provide hope and guidance to those in need.

The Indian government has actively strengthened mental health support through various initiatives, making care more accessible to all. Programs like Tele-MANAS offer round-the-clock counseling in multiple languages, reaching millions, while the District Mental Health Programme operates in over 700 districts to provide comprehensive services through psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. Additionally, the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare centers via Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, along with cashless coverage for 22 procedures under PM-JAY, ensures timely and affordable care. In line with this year’s World Mental Health Day theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” such efforts aim to support vulnerable populations during crises, reflecting India’s growing commitment to holistic mental health care.
