PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni Plant Black Mulberry Sapling in Rome, Marking a New Chapter in India-Italy Relations

In a touching display of friendship and shared commitment to sustainability, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni jointly planted a Black Mulberry sapling at the historic Villa Doria Pamphili in Rome on May 20, 2026. The simple yet meaningful act served as a living symbol of the deep cultural connections and growing strategic partnership between India and Italy.

The Black Mulberry, known in India as Krishna Toot (Morus nigra), carries rich significance in both countries. In India, the tree is valued for its sweet fruits, traditional medicinal properties in Ayurveda, and cultural heritage. In Italy, mulberry trees have long been part of landscapes for soil conservation, gastronomy, and historic estates. This joint plantation beautifully bridged the two nations' heritage while advancing environmental goals.

A Gesture Rooted in Sustainability

The tree-planting ceremony was conducted under India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, which encourages citizens to plant trees in the name of their mothers as a tribute to both family and Mother Earth. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the plantation promotes environmental consciousness and sustainable living. Both leaders highlighted how such steps reflect a common vision for combating climate change and fostering greener futures.

This symbolic moment came during the final leg of Prime Minister Modi’s five-nation European tour and added a warm, personal touch to high-level diplomatic engagements.

Elevation to Special Strategic Partnership

The plantation followed extensive bilateral discussions at Villa Doria Pamphili, where the two Prime Ministers formally elevated India-Italy relations to a Special Strategic Partnership — the highest level in the history of their diplomatic ties. This upgrade builds on earlier cooperation and introduces a structured Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025–2029.

The leaders expressed strong resolve to expand collaboration across multiple domains. They set an ambitious target to increase bilateral trade to €20 billion by 2029 and pledged to accelerate progress toward the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Discussions also covered defence and security, including a new defence industrial roadmap focused on co-development and co-production of military platforms.

Other key areas of focus included artificial intelligence with an emphasis on trustworthy and human-centric approaches, critical technologies, cybersecurity, space, clean energy, and maritime cooperation. The two sides also advanced the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) to enhance connectivity and resilient supply chains. A Foreign Minister-level mechanism was established to regularly monitor progress under the new action plan.

Prime Minister Modi described the partnership as gaining fresh momentum, direction, and confidence, while Prime Minister Meloni emphasised the strength of trust and shared values between the two democracies. Both leaders also interacted with business representatives to boost industrial and investment ties.

Deepening Cultural and People-to-People Bonds

Beyond strategic and economic matters, the visit reinforced cultural and people-to-people connections. Several Memorandums of Understanding were signed in areas such as education, traditional medicine (including Ayurveda), agriculture, culture, and mobility. These steps are expected to bring the two societies closer and create new opportunities for collaboration and exchange.

The MGMM Outlook

The Black Mulberry sapling planted jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome reflects far more than a ceremonial gesture—it symbolizes the strengthening trust, shared values, and expanding partnership between India and Italy. By connecting cultural heritage with environmental responsibility through initiatives like ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ both nations have demonstrated how diplomacy can be made more meaningful through actions that resonate with people and reinforce a shared commitment to sustainability and global responsibility.

At the same time, the elevation of India-Italy ties to a Special Strategic Partnership marks a decisive step toward deeper cooperation in trade, defence, technology, clean energy, and global connectivity. The ambitious roadmap agreed upon by both leaders shows a forward-looking vision built on mutual respect and strategic alignment. This growing partnership highlights India’s expanding diplomatic influence in Europe while opening new opportunities for stronger economic, cultural, and people-to-people engagement between the two democracies.
