Nitin Gadkari’s Vision: Building India into a Global Leader

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has delivered a clear and compelling message: India will truly command global respect only when it becomes strong across every sector of national life. Speaking at the Akhand Bharat Sankalp Din event organised by the Rashtra Nirman Samiti, Gadkari emphasised that the concept of a vishwaguru — a guiding light for the world — cannot rest on words alone. It requires deep-rooted progress in economics, defence, science and technology, agriculture, and business, supported by a culture of patriotism and strong values among citizens.

Marking the eve of India’s 1947 partition, Gadkari described the division between India and Pakistan as “unnatural” and reiterated his belief in the vision of Akhand Bharat — a united India. While this vision carries symbolic and emotional weight, he stressed that it must be matched with practical work to make the country prosperous, powerful, and respected.

Economic Growth as the Foundation of Global Influence

For Gadkari, economic might is the backbone of global standing. He echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambition of transforming India into a $5 trillion economy and the third-largest economy in the world. This transformation, he said, must be achieved through the principle of Atmanirbharta — self-reliance — so that India not only meets its own needs but also serves as a reliable partner and leader on the international stage.

He called for a mindset shift where citizens embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, and productivity. Reducing dependence on imports while expanding exports is, in his view, essential to building economic independence and ensuring that India can negotiate from a position of strength in the global arena.

Infrastructure: The Engine of Progress

Under Gadkari’s leadership, India’s infrastructure has undergone an unprecedented transformation. The national highway network has expanded by more than 60% since 2014, making it the second-largest in the world. High-speed corridors have multiplied rapidly, and an ambitious project is underway to upgrade 30,000 km of two-lane highways into four-lane roads, backed by an investment of ₹10 lakh crore.

He regards infrastructure as the lifeline of economic activity, enabling smoother logistics, reducing travel time, and boosting industrial growth. For him, roads and highways are not merely construction projects — they are strategic investments that will shape India’s future.

Clean Energy and Technological Leadership

Gadkari’s vision also looks firmly toward the future of clean energy and sustainable mobility. He has championed ethanol as the “fuel of the future” and advocated for lower GST rates on higher ethanol blends to make them more accessible. His focus extends to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, with the aim of making India a global leader in these sectors.

He envisions a future where renewable fuel technology not only reduces pollution and oil imports but also creates new manufacturing opportunities, jobs, and exports. By taking the lead in alternative energy solutions, India can position itself at the forefront of the global shift toward green mobility.

A Rising Automotive Powerhouse

The automobile industry is, in Gadkari’s eyes, one of India’s greatest assets in its journey to global prominence. He predicts that within five years, India will surpass both the United States and China to become the world’s largest automobile market. This will be driven by advances in electric vehicles, the growth of alternative fuels, and strategic investments from global manufacturers who are increasingly choosing India as a production hub.

He views the sector not just as a source of economic output, but as a platform to showcase Indian engineering and technological capabilities to the world.

Empowering Communities for Inclusive Growth

Gadkari’s vision is not limited to high-level economic and industrial policies — it also reaches into grassroots empowerment. He has highlighted the urgent need for 2.2 million skilled drivers in the country and proposed training initiatives to involve tribal communities in this opportunity. Programmes such as the introduction of “pink e-rickshaws” for women drivers aim to combine economic empowerment with social inclusion.

He has also encouraged the promotion of traditional tribal arts such as Warli and Gondi painting, not only as cultural preservation but as a means of creating sustainable livelihoods. In Gadkari’s perspective, a nation’s strength is inseparable from the empowerment of its most marginalised citizens.

Trade, Technology, and International Standing

Gadkari has pointed out that the countries with the most influence today are those with strong economies and advanced technology. He argued that India must adopt a similar approach, where economic and technological strength replaces any need for aggressive diplomacy. By cutting imports and boosting exports, India can move toward genuine self-reliance, allowing it to engage with the world from a position of confidence.

Road Safety as a National Duty

In his closing remarks, Gadkari turned to an issue that affects millions daily — road safety. He stressed that a truly strong nation is one where the lives of its citizens are protected, and this requires discipline, awareness, and responsibility on the roads. For him, national progress is not measured only by GDP growth or infrastructure projects but by the safety, wellbeing, and quality of life of its people.

Conclusion: The Road to Becoming a Vishwaguru

Nitin Gadkari’s vision for India is comprehensive, blending emotional nationalism with pragmatic policy-making. His blueprint for becoming a vishwaguru rests on the belief that only a nation strong in every respect — economically, technologically, culturally, and socially — can command the respect of the world. Through massive infrastructure expansion, leadership in clean energy, global competitiveness in the automotive sector, and inclusive community development, he envisions a future where India is both self-reliant and globally admired.

For Gadkari, the journey to this goal is not solely the responsibility of the government. It is a collective mission, one in which every citizen has a role to play in shaping India into a nation that the world will not just hear, but listen to.
