National Space Day is more than a celebration of India’s achievements in space exploration. It is also a reminder of how space technology is increasingly becoming a critical pillar of national development, scientific advancement, and strategic security. As the nation commemorates the historic success of Chandrayaan-3, India is now looking towards a new frontier—developing a space-based surveillance network capable of detecting missile launches within seconds and strengthening the country’s defensive capabilities. National Space Day and India’s Growing Space Ambitions
National Space Day is observed every year on 23 August to mark the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon’s south pole in 2023. The achievement placed India among a select group of nations that have successfully landed on the Moon and made it the first country to reach the lunar south polar region. The mission demonstrated India’s technological capabilities and reinforced its position as a leading global space power.

Unlike traditional ground-based radar systems, satellites operating in space can continuously observe large areas without being limited by terrain, weather conditions, or the curvature of the Earth. By placing advanced sensors in orbit, India aims to achieve persistent surveillance of its borders, maritime zones, and strategic regions of interest.
The programme is expected to play a vital role in strengthening national security by providing early warning of hostile missile launches, aircraft movements, drone incursions, and other aerial threats.
Detecting Missiles Within Seconds of Launch
One of the most significant features of the proposed system is its ability to detect missile launches almost immediately after they occur. Modern missiles generate intense heat during their boost phase. Satellites equipped with infrared sensors can identify these thermal signatures within seconds of launch. Once detected, the information can be transmitted instantly to command centres and air defence networks, providing valuable additional time for military decision-makers to respond.
This capability is particularly important in modern warfare, where ballistic and cruise missiles can travel vast distances within minutes. Early detection can significantly increase the likelihood of successful interception by allowing defence systems to engage threats sooner in their flight path.
The 52-Satellite Space-Based Surveillance Programme
At the heart of this initiative is India’s ambitious Space-Based Surveillance Phase III programme. The project involves the deployment of 52 advanced surveillance satellites designed to provide round-the-clock monitoring across land and maritime domains.
The satellites will operate in a combination of Low Earth Orbit and Geostationary Orbit, enabling continuous observation with improved resolution and shorter revisit times. The network will include optical imaging satellites, synthetic aperture radar satellites capable of seeing through clouds and darkness, and communication satellites that facilitate secure transmission of intelligence data.
The programme represents one of the largest defence-space initiatives undertaken by India and is expected to be developed through collaboration between ISRO, the Defence Space Agency, and private-sector space companies.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra and Integrated Defence
The satellite network is expected to serve as a crucial component of Mission Sudarshan Chakra, India’s next-generation integrated air and missile defence architecture. Announced with the objective of strengthening India’s air defence and ballistic missile defence capabilities, Mission Sudarshan Chakra seeks to integrate space-based assets, advanced radars, interceptor missiles, artificial intelligence systems, and command networks into a unified defensive shield.
The concept is designed to reduce the time between threat detection and response. By combining satellite-based surveillance with ground-based air defence systems, India aims to create a seamless network capable of identifying, tracking, and neutralising multiple threats simultaneously.
Strengthening India’s Missile Defence Shield
India has spent years developing a robust ballistic missile defence system. Existing interceptor systems are capable of engaging hostile missiles both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The addition of a space-based early warning layer will significantly enhance the effectiveness of these capabilities.
The country is also working on next-generation interceptor technologies designed to counter emerging threats such as hypersonic missiles and manoeuvrable warheads. Programmes such as Project Kusha and advanced interceptor missile development efforts are expected to complement the surveillance network and contribute to a more comprehensive defence shield.
