Narendra Modi Receives Israel’s Highest Parliamentary Honour: A Landmark Moment in India–Israel Relations

In a significant diplomatic achievement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Speaker of the Knesset Medal, the highest honour awarded by Israel’s Parliament, during his official visit to Israel in February 2026. The award was presented by Amir Ohana at the Knesset following Modiji’s historic address to Israeli lawmakers. This recognition marked a historic first, as Modiji became the first Indian Prime Minister and among the few global leaders to receive this prestigious parliamentary honour. The award symbolised appreciation for his role in strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation between India and Israel across multiple sectors.

Historic Address and Diplomatic Warmth

During his visit, Modiji addressed the Israeli Parliament, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. His speech was received with standing ovations, reflecting the strong diplomatic goodwill between the two nations. Modiji highlighted the shared democratic values of India and Israel, emphasising that both countries have faced similar security challenges and have emerged stronger through resilience and innovation.

He also reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism, stating that terrorism in any form is unacceptable and poses a threat to humanity as a whole. Expressing solidarity with Israel during difficult times, Modiji underscored the importance of global cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East region. His remarks reinforced India’s consistent position on counter-terrorism and international security.

Expanding Strategic Partnership Between India and Israel

India–Israel relations have witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, particularly after Modiji’s landmark 2017 visit, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to Israel. Since then, cooperation has expanded significantly in defence, agriculture, water management, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, innovation, and trade.

During the 2026 visit, Modiji held discussions with Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, focusing on enhancing defence collaboration, joint technological development, and economic partnerships. Both nations also explored possibilities for strengthening trade ties, including discussions around a potential free trade agreement that could further boost economic engagement.

Agricultural cooperation remains one of the most successful pillars of the relationship. Israeli technology has helped Indian farmers improve productivity through advanced irrigation systems and modern farming techniques, with several Centres of Excellence operating across India. These initiatives demonstrate how bilateral cooperation directly benefits ordinary citizens.

A Rare Diplomatic Distinction in the Middle East

One of the most notable aspects of Modiji’s global diplomacy is that he has received top civilian honours from both Israel and Palestine. In 2018, he was awarded the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the highest Palestinian honour for foreign dignitaries. This rare distinction highlights India’s balanced diplomatic engagement in the Middle East and its ability to maintain strong relationships with multiple stakeholders in a complex geopolitical region.

Such recognition reflects India’s longstanding foreign policy approach based on dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation rather than alignment with any single bloc. It also demonstrates the growing international acknowledgment of India’s diplomatic influence under Modiji’s leadership.

Symbolism, Cultural Connections, and Shared Values

Beyond political and economic discussions, Modiji’s visit also carried strong symbolic significance. India and Israel share deep historical connections, including centuries-old ties between Indian and Jewish communities. Cultural exchanges, technological collaboration, and people-to-people engagement have further strengthened mutual understanding between the two nations.

The visit also highlighted India’s respect for historical memory and human values, reinforcing the broader moral dimension of bilateral relations. Such symbolic gestures play an important role in building trust and long-term partnerships between countries.

The MGMM Outlook

The decision to confer Israel’s highest parliamentary honour on Narendra Modi reflects the deepening trust and strategic alignment between India and Israel, particularly in areas like defence, technology, agriculture, and counter-terrorism cooperation. His historic address at the Knesset and meetings with leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu and Isaac Herzog highlighted how the partnership has evolved from limited engagement into a comprehensive strategic relationship over the past decade. The recognition also underscores India’s growing diplomatic confidence and its willingness to engage openly with partners based on shared interests and mutual respect.

At the same time, India’s ability to maintain ties across the Middle East remains evident, as Modiji has previously received the Grand Collar honour from the State of Palestine, demonstrating a balanced foreign policy approach. Cooperation initiatives, especially in agricultural innovation and water management, show that the relationship is not limited to government-level diplomacy but delivers practical benefits to citizens. The honour therefore symbolises India’s rising international stature, expanding global partnerships, and its role as an increasingly influential voice in shaping regional stability and cooperation.
