Jaishankar Strengthens India’s Global Diplomacy at the 81st UN General Assembly

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a series of important bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The discussions focused on strengthening strategic partnerships, addressing regional and global security concerns, expanding economic cooperation, and promoting reforms in multilateral institutions.

As leaders from around the world gathered for the UNGA High-Level Week, India’s diplomatic outreach reflected its growing engagement with both developed and developing nations while contributing to conversations on peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

Expanding Strategic Partnerships Across Continents

During the summit, Jaishankar met his counterparts from countries including France, Australia, Egypt, Switzerland, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Norway, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Uruguay, Ecuador, Slovakia, and the Dominican Republic. Each meeting reviewed the progress of bilateral relations and explored new opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, technology, education, infrastructure, and clean energy.

His discussions with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reaffirmed the strong India–France Strategic Partnership, with both sides emphasizing cooperation in defence, space, maritime security, and emerging technologies. Similar engagements with European and Indo-Pacific partners highlighted the importance of innovation-driven growth and resilient economic partnerships.

Addressing Regional Security and Global Challenges

A major focus of Jaishankar’s meetings was the evolving geopolitical landscape. Leaders exchanged views on developments in West Asia, the Russia–Ukraine conflict, maritime security, counter-terrorism, and the need to safeguard global supply chains from future disruptions. India reiterated its consistent approach of encouraging dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution of international disputes while supporting stability and respect for international law.

The discussions also recognized the wider economic consequences of geopolitical tensions, particularly their impact on energy markets, food security, transportation, and inflation affecting many developing economies.

India’s Vision for Reformed Multilateralism

Alongside bilateral engagements, Jaishankar participated in the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace and Prosperity (P4M) Summit, where he emphasized that today’s global institutions must evolve to reflect contemporary realities. He noted that stronger international cooperation and more representative global governance are essential for addressing cross-border challenges such as conflict, climate change, economic uncertainty, and technological transformation.

India also continued to advocate for reforms of the United Nations Security Council, arguing that a more inclusive and representative multilateral system would strengthen the effectiveness and credibility of global decision-making.

The extensive diplomatic engagements at UNGA demonstrate India’s commitment to building meaningful partnerships across diverse regions.
