India to Get First Dengue Vaccine Qdenga in 2027: A New Chapter in Dengue Prevention
India is preparing to introduce its first approved dengue vaccine, Qdenga, in the private market in the first half of 2027. Developed by Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda, Qdenga is expected to give India another important tool in tackling dengue, a mosquito-borne disease that continues to affect thousands of people every year.
The development follows an agreement between Takeda and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories for the promotion and distribution of Qdenga in India’s private market. The agreement comes after the vaccine received approval from India’s drug regulator for use in people aged 4 to 60 years.

Qdenga to Become Available in India in 2027
Under the agreement, Dr Reddy’s will exclusively promote and distribute Qdenga for paediatric and adult vaccination in the private market. Takeda will continue to manufacture and import the vaccine and retain rights related to the public market.
The companies expect the vaccine to become available in India during the first half of 2027. Its final price has not yet been announced, meaning affordability and accessibility will become important considerations once the vaccine enters the market.
The arrival of Qdenga is significant because it provides India with a new preventive approach against dengue alongside existing measures such as mosquito control, surveillance and early treatment.
How Qdenga Works Against Dengue
Qdenga, also known as TAK-003, is a live-attenuated tetravalent vaccine. It uses weakened versions of dengue virus strains to stimulate an immune response against the four dengue serotypes—DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4. The vaccine uses DENV-2 as its genetic backbone.
The vaccination schedule consists of two doses administered three months apart. According to the information surrounding its Indian approval and distribution, Qdenga can be administered without requiring prior dengue-infection screening.
However, vaccination does not provide complete protection against every dengue infection. The World Health Organization considers vaccination to be one component of a broader dengue-control strategy rather than a replacement for mosquito-control measures.
Why Dengue Prevention Matters
Dengue is transmitted primarily by infected Aedes mosquitoes, which can breed in stagnant water around homes and communities. The disease can cause high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain and, in some cases, serious complications requiring hospital care.
The global dengue burden has increased considerably in recent years. WHO reported that 2024 saw a record 14.4 million dengue cases and 11,201 deaths worldwide. India accounted for 232,425 reported cases and 233 deaths that year, according to figures cited by Reuters.
India's climate, seasonal rainfall and large urban and semi-urban populations create conditions in which dengue transmission can become a recurring public-health challenge. The availability of a vaccine could therefore add another layer to prevention efforts, particularly in areas where dengue transmission is substantial.
WHO Guidance and the Importance of Appropriate Use
While Qdenga has received regulatory approval in India for a broader age range, WHO's public-health recommendation is more specific. WHO currently recommends TAK-003 for children aged 6–16 years living in settings with high dengue transmission intensity. It does not recommend routine programmatic use in low- to moderate-transmission settings because important questions remain concerning its benefit-risk profile in some dengue-seronegative populations.
WHO also states that Qdenga should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding and is contraindicated for people with certain immune deficiencies. These recommendations highlight the importance of following medical advice and the applicable Indian prescribing information when the vaccine becomes available.
Vaccination and Mosquito Control Must Work Together
The introduction of Qdenga does not remove the need for basic dengue-prevention measures. Since dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes, reducing mosquito breeding remains central to controlling the disease.
Eliminating stagnant water, maintaining clean surroundings, using mosquito repellents and preventing mosquitoes from entering homes can reduce exposure. WHO also stresses that comprehensive vector control, proper case management, community education and public participation should continue alongside vaccination programmes.This integrated approach will be particularly important because the same mosquito vectors can transmit other viral diseases as well.
A New Preventive Option for India
The expected arrival of Qdenga in 2027 marks an important development in India's approach to dengue prevention. With the vaccine already approved by the Indian regulator and a distribution partnership established for the private market, vaccination is set to become an additional option for eligible people.
Its long-term impact will depend on factors such as affordability, availability, appropriate use, vaccination coverage and continued disease surveillance. At the same time, mosquito-control programmes and public awareness will remain essential.
