India Steps Up Winter Fog Preparedness as Airlines Brace for Flight Disruptions

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines and airport authorities to strengthen preparations ahead of the winter fog season, warning that reduced visibility could lead to flight delays, cancellations and rescheduling. The focus is on ensuring aircraft and crew availability, maintaining essential airport equipment and improving coordination among aviation stakeholders to minimise disruptions and protect passenger safety.

According to reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified December 15, 2026, to February 15, 2027, as the period covered by the current fog preparedness exercise. During a review meeting on October 27, aviation officials assessed arrangements for managing low-visibility conditions, particularly at airports vulnerable to dense winter fog. Airlines have been asked to plan schedules realistically and ensure that their aircraft and crew are prepared to operate within the applicable safety requirements.

Airports to Ensure Equipment and Safety Systems Are Ready

Airport infrastructure is a key part of the preparations. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and airport operators have been asked to check the operational readiness of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and Runway Visual Range (RVR) equipment. These systems help pilots and air traffic controllers assess visibility and support safe aircraft approaches and landings when weather conditions deteriorate.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will monitor compliance with aviation regulations, while air traffic controllers and air navigation service providers will follow established low-visibility procedures. The IMD will provide weather forecasts and timely updates to help airlines and airports make informed operational decisions.

Why Winter Fog Can Disrupt Flight Schedules

Dense fog is a recurring challenge for Indian aviation, particularly in northern India. Reduced visibility can restrict aircraft movements and increase the time required between take-offs and landings. Even when specialised equipment is available, operations must comply with prescribed safety standards.

Disruptions can also spread across an airline's network. A delayed aircraft may arrive late for its next scheduled departure, while crew availability and duty-time limits can create additional operational challenges. Advance planning, adequate staffing and effective coordination can help airlines manage these difficulties, although severe weather may still affect schedules.

Passenger Convenience Remains a Priority

The ministry has also emphasised timely communication with passengers. Airlines have been directed to provide updates about delays, cancellations and revised departure times through SMS, email and mobile applications. Adequate staffing at check-in counters and customer service desks is intended to help travellers receive accurate information and assistance during disruptions.

Ground-handling teams and airport operators are also expected to coordinate passenger movement, baggage operations and other essential services. These arrangements can help reduce confusion and waiting times when flight schedules change unexpectedly.

Lessons from Previous Fog Seasons

India's earlier experience with winter fog has demonstrated the importance of advance preparation. In October 2023, the Ministry of Civil Aviation reported a reduction in flight cancellations and diversions at major fog-affected airports compared with the preceding year. Such efforts highlight how coordination, functioning equipment and operational planning can improve resilience during challenging weather conditions.

The latest review brings together aviation regulators, airport operators, weather officials, security agencies and airlines to strengthen preparedness across the sector. Cooperation among these organisations is essential because disruptions at one airport can affect flights and passengers in several other cities.

The MGMM Outlook

India’s preparations for the winter fog season highlight the importance of aviation safety, operational planning and coordination among airlines, airports and regulatory authorities. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines to ensure aircraft and crew readiness, while airport operators have been asked to check essential systems such as Instrument Landing Systems and Runway Visual Range equipment. With the preparedness exercise covering December 15, 2026, to February 15, 2027, these measures aim to manage low-visibility conditions and minimise avoidable disruptions while maintaining passenger safety.

Effective implementation of these arrangements will be important for reducing inconvenience during the winter travel season. Timely weather forecasts, coordination between aviation agencies and prompt communication about delays or cancellations can help passengers plan their journeys more confidently. Although dense fog may still affect flight schedules, advance preparation and reliable airport infrastructure can support smoother operations. Travellers are also encouraged to check flight updates before leaving for the airport, while continued attention to safety, passenger assistance and operational readiness remains essential for India's growing aviation sector.
