In a landmark development for Indian aviation, SkyHop Aviation has received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This approval positions the Gurugram-based company to launch India’s first dedicated commercial seaplane operations, opening a new chapter in regional air connectivity.
The milestone reflects years of dedicated preparation and marks a significant step towards harnessing innovative aviation solutions for India’s diverse geography. SkyHop Aviation, promoted as the country’s first standalone seaplane operator, aims to connect remote islands, coastal regions, and hilly areas where traditional airports are challenging to develop.
Regulatory Milestone Achieved
The DGCA’s grant of the AOC follows a rigorous certification process and successful demonstration flights conducted earlier this month. These trials included seamless water take-offs and landings at the Ganga Barrage in Haridwar/Rishikesh and Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand. Using a modified De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft equipped with floats, SkyHop has proven the operational readiness of seaplane services in Indian conditions.
This certification not only validates the company’s technical and safety standards but also strengthens the foundation for sustainable seaplane operations across the country.
Launch Plans in Lakshadweep
SkyHop Aviation will commence commercial services with a 19-seater seaplane, initially linking five islands in the picturesque Lakshadweep archipelago with each other and the mainland. By operating directly from water bodies, these flights will dramatically reduce travel times, enhance accessibility, and boost tourism and economic activities in the union territory.
The seaplane model is particularly well-suited for island regions, as it eliminates the need for extensive runway infrastructure while offering a comfortable and efficient mode of transport. This initiative is expected to create new opportunities for local communities and visitors alike.

Founded and led by Avani Singh, daughter of SpiceJet promoter Ajay Singh, SkyHop Aviation represents a focused and independent venture in the aviation sector. Avani Singh expressed her enthusiasm following the approval, stating, “Receiving the AOC is an important milestone for us and the result of consistent effort over the past year. Building SkyHop from the ground up has been a learning experience, and this certification gives us the foundation to move ahead with confidence.”
She extended gratitude to Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, and DGCA Director General Vir Vikram Yadav for their guidance and support. Singh emphasised the company’s mission to provide safe, reliable connectivity to regions that have traditionally been difficult to access, contributing meaningfully to regional development and national integration.

The launch of SkyHop’s services aligns with the government’s continued emphasis on enhancing regional air connectivity through innovative means. Recent policy measures, including incentives for seaplane manufacturing and viability gap funding, have created a conducive environment for such projects. Beyond Lakshadweep, the company is exploring opportunities in other promising locations such as the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and various mainland coastal and riverine areas.
