A rake of up to 20 broad-gauge passenger coaches is expected to be ready for export in July, representing the initial consignment since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The move signals a return to normalcy in bilateral railway projects that had faced temporary delays amid the political changes. Under this agreement, RITES will supply a total of 200 broad-gauge passenger coaches to Bangladesh Railway, with 104 air-conditioned and 96 non-air-conditioned units. The project, funded by the European Investment Bank, was secured through a transparent global competitive bidding process.

Manufacturing is underway at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab. The contract also includes comprehensive support such as design expertise, spare parts supply, training for personnel, and commissioning services. The supply and commissioning phase spans 36 months, followed by a 24-month warranty period, with phased deliveries planned through December 2027.

RITES Managing Director Rahul Mithal has noted that these deliveries are expected to contribute meaningfully to the company’s revenue in the coming fiscal year, underscoring the project’s importance for India’s rail export ambitions.

Historical Context and Previous Collaborations

India and Bangladesh have a successful track record of railway cooperation. In prior contracts executed through RITES, India supplied 120 modern LHB-type broad-gauge coaches along with locomotives, significantly enhancing Bangladesh’s passenger rail services.
