The Indian government has provided strong assurances regarding the country’s energy supplies, confirming that adequate stocks of crude oil, petroleum products, LPG, and LNG are available to meet domestic requirements for nearly two months. This statement aims to address public concerns arising from ongoing tensions in West Asia and disruptions in key shipping routes.
Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have emphasised that the supply chain remains stable and resilient, with refineries operating at full or above-normal capacity. Strong Inventory Positions and Operational Readiness
India currently maintains approximately 60 days of overall oil stock cover, which includes crude oil, refined products, and strategic reserves stored in underground caverns. The total storage infrastructure supports up to 74 days of requirements. Crude oil procurement for the next two months has already been secured through a diversified network of international suppliers.
Refineries across the country are functioning efficiently, with high utilisation rates helping to offset any temporary import challenges. Supplies of petrol, diesel, and other petroleum products remain uninterrupted, supported by robust inventory levels at refineries, terminals, and depots.
On the LPG front, domestic production has been significantly ramped up, now meeting a larger share of national needs. Additional cargoes have been arranged from alternative sources such as the United States, Russia, and Australia, ensuring continuity for households and commercial users.
Promoting Piped Natural Gas for Long-Term Efficiency
In parallel with immediate supply management, the government is actively encouraging a transition from LPG cylinders to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in areas where pipeline infrastructure is available. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma and other officials have urged citizens to avoid panic buying and to purchase fuel and LPG only according to their genuine needs. They have appealed to the public to conserve energy wherever possible and rely on verified information rather than rumours circulating on social media.
The government has put in place monitoring mechanisms, including a dedicated control room, to track availability and respond swiftly to any localised fluctuations. This proactive approach has helped maintain stability despite external pressures.
