India-Pakistan Conflict: Measured Response Averts Nuclear Escalation, Says Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has firmly dismissed concerns about a potential nuclear escalation between India and Pakistan during the recent Operation Sindoor. In an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Jaishankar emphasized that the military actions were targeted, measured, and deliberately non-escalatory, focusing solely on terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan.

“Very, very far away,” Jaishankar responded when asked about the proximity to nuclear conflict. “We have terrorist targets. Those were very measured, carefully considered, and non-escalating steps.”

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives. The operation targeted nine terrorist facilities across Pakistan-controlled territories, leading to four days of hostilities involving drones, missiles, and long-range weapons. The ceasefire was established on May 10 following a request from Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).

Jaishankar criticized the narrative that any conflict in South Asia could escalate to nuclear war, stating, “That disturbs me a lot because it encourages terrible activities like terrorism.” He highlighted that terrorist organizations operate openly in Pakistan, with many listed in the UN Security Council terror list. “In Pakistan, terrorism is a very open business. A business that is supported, financed, organized, and used by the state. And by their military,” he added.

Addressing claims of U.S. mediation in the ceasefire, Jaishankar clarified that the cessation of hostilities was a bilateral decision between India and Pakistan, with no involvement from external parties. “The cessation of firing was agreed between the military commanders of both countries,” he affirmed.

India's stance remains clear: it will not succumb to nuclear blackmail and will handle its relationship with Pakistan strictly on a bilateral basis. “There should be no confusion in any quarter in that regard,” Jaishankar stated during his visit to Germany.
