India Opens Strategic Missile Production to Private Sector, Astra Mk-2 and Pralay to Lead the Next Phase

In a landmark development for India's defence industry, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has invited private Indian companies to become partners in the development and production of strategic missile and bomb weapon systems. The initiative marks a major shift in India's indigenous defence manufacturing policy, with the Astra Mk-2 air-to-air missile expected to be the first major project opened to private industry, followed by the Pralay tactical ballistic missile.


The move is aimed at expanding production capacity, accelerating the delivery of advanced weapon systems, and strengthening India's long-term goal of building a self-reliant and globally competitive defence manufacturing ecosystem.

A New Era for India's Defence Manufacturing

India's missile programmes have traditionally been developed by DRDO and manufactured primarily through public sector defence enterprises. As the operational requirements of the armed forces continue to grow and international interest in Indian-made missile systems rises, the government is now bringing the private sector into one of the country's most strategic defence domains.


Under the new model, selected Indian defence companies will be able to participate not only in manufacturing but also in the development, integration, testing and future upgrades of advanced missile systems. This collaborative approach is expected to strengthen domestic industrial capabilities while ensuring faster production of critical defence equipment.


Astra Mk-2: India's Next-Generation Air Combat Missile

The Astra Mk-2 will be the first missile programme opened to private manufacturers. Developed by DRDO, it is an indigenous beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile with an operational range of around 180 to 200 kilometres, designed to engage enemy aircraft long before they enter visual range.


The missile is expected to be integrated with some of India's most important fighter aircraft, including the Tejas Mk-1A, Su-30MKI, MiG-29, and the Rafale Marine. Its improved propulsion, guidance and long-range engagement capability will significantly enhance the Indian Air Force's air superiority and precision strike potential.


According to reports, the Defence Ministry is expected to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP), allowing leading Indian defence companies to compete for the manufacturing contract.


Pralay: Strengthening Tactical Strike Power

The next strategic weapon likely to enter private production is the Pralay missile, a conventional surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile developed for rapid and highly accurate battlefield strikes. It has an operational range of 150 to 500 kilometres and is capable of travelling at speeds of nearly Mach 6, making it one of India's most powerful conventional missile systems.


Pralay is designed for mobile launch platforms, allowing quick deployment across diverse terrains. The missile is expected to play a central role in India's proposed Integrated Rocket Force, alongside systems such as BrahMos, the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM), and the extended-range Pinaka rocket system.


Why the Private Sector Matters

Opening strategic missile production to private companies is expected to significantly increase India's manufacturing capacity. With multiple domestic firms contributing to production, the armed forces can receive advanced missile systems more efficiently while reducing dependence on a single manufacturing source.


The policy also encourages greater innovation, investment in advanced defence technologies, and the growth of a stronger indigenous supply chain. It reflects the broader objective of promoting high-value manufacturing under India's self-reliance initiative and creating a competitive domestic defence industry capable of supporting future military requirements.


Growing Opportunities for Defence Exports

India's indigenous missile systems are increasingly attracting interest from friendly nations. The Astra missile family, in particular, has emerged as a promising export platform, and expanding production through private industry could help meet both domestic demand and future international orders. Increased manufacturing capacity is also expected to enhance India's position as a reliable supplier of advanced defence technology in the global market.
