India Briefs Global Envoys on Pahalgam Terror Attack, Takes Decisive Diplomatic Action Against Pakistan

In the wake of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives — including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen — the Indian government has undertaken a series of strong diplomatic and security responses, while simultaneously briefing key global powers on the evolving situation.

On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) convened a 30-minute emergency meeting with top diplomats from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Italy, Germany, France, Russia, Japan, China, and Qatar. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri led the briefing, updating foreign envoys on the brutal attack and India’s immediate actions. The discussions included detailed intelligence suggesting Pakistan’s involvement, which has drawn widespread condemnation from the international community. (This part is taken from India TV)

The attack, which took place in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, saw five heavily armed terrorists indiscriminately shoot unarmed civilians and tourists. Survivors reported horrifying scenes of attackers singling out individuals and questioning them about their religion before executing them. Security agencies have pointed to The Resistance Front, a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, as the likely perpetrator — echoing the 2019 Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a public event in Bihar, delivered a stern warning to global terror networks. Switching from Hindi to English to emphasize the gravity of India’s position on the global stage, he stated: “India will identify and punish every terrorist, and those behind them.” The shift in language was widely interpreted as a signal to the international community that India will respond decisively.

Following a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, India announced several retaliatory measures targeting Pakistan: (This part is taken from Times of India)

  • Visa Suspension: India has suspended all visa services for Pakistani nationals with immediate effect. Existing visas, including those under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, stand revoked. Medical visas will remain valid only until April 29, 2025.

  • Expulsion Orders: Pakistani nationals currently in India have been instructed to leave before their visa expiry, and officials of the Pakistani High Commission have been declared Persona Non Grata, with a deadline of one week to exit the country.

  • Treaty Action: India has decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 until Pakistan verifiably ceases support for cross-border terrorism.

  • Border and Airspace Moves: India has shut down the integrated Attari Check Post. In retaliation, Islamabad has closed the Wagah border, suspended SAARC visas for Indian nationals, and denied Indian airlines access to its airspace.

As the attackers remain at large, sketches have been released and search operations continue in the forested areas around Pahalgam. Meanwhile, videos from the attack’s aftermath showing women crying beside the bodies of their loved ones have sparked national outrage. (This part is taken from Hindustan Times)

Global powers — including the US, EU nations, Israel, Russia, Brazil, and even China — have expressed solidarity with India and condemned the killings.

Conclusion

India’s swift and assertive actions reflect a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and its sponsors. By revoking diplomatic ties, suspending treaties, and intensifying international outreach, the Indian government is signaling that acts of terror will not only be countered militarily but also diplomatically and strategically. As global support continues to pour in, India’s message is clear: those who orchestrate and enable terror will face serious consequences.
