India and the United Kingdom have taken another significant step to strengthen their bilateral ties, with National Security Advisers Ajit Doval and Jonathan Powell holding comprehensive discussions in the national capital. The annual India-UK Strategic Dialogue, held on April 23, focused on deepening cooperation across technology, defence, security, and counter-terrorism, while advancing the shared goals outlined in the India-UK Vision 2035 roadmap.

The talks underscored the growing maturity of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. Both sides described the deliberations as substantive and forward-looking, reflecting a strong commitment to collaboration amid evolving global challenges.

Progress Under the Technology Security Initiative

A central focus of the meeting was the review of the India-UK Technology Security Initiative (TSI), which has gained considerable momentum since its launch. The two countries highlighted notable achievements in key areas such as telecommunications, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, and biotechnology.

One of the standout developments is the establishment of India’s first commercial compound semiconductor fabrication facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This facility, developed through a partnership between Indian firm SiCSem Private Limited and UK-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd., is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem. It will support critical sectors including defence, electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centres, contributing to technological self-reliance for both nations.

Further cooperation includes the launch of the India-UK Connectivity and Innovation Centre and initiatives aimed at building resilient supply chains for critical minerals. Joint efforts in artificial intelligence, 6G technology, and advanced materials are also progressing steadily, aimed at fostering innovation and ensuring secure technology frameworks.

Strengthening Defence Industrial Collaboration

Defence cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides reviewing advancements under the 10-year India-UK Defence Industrial Roadmap. The roadmap emphasises joint development and production, moving beyond traditional procurement to deeper industrial integration in areas such as aerospace, naval systems, and maritime technologies.

Ajit Doval invited greater participation from UK companies in co-development projects and supply chain integration with Indian industries. The two NSAs also explored opportunities to enhance maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region and expand military-to-military engagements, including joint exercises and capacity-building initiatives.

Counter-Terrorism and Security Coordination

The National Security Advisers emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration in countering terrorism and extremism. Doval appreciated the United Kingdom’s support in addressing security challenges, including activities linked to pro-Khalistan elements, and called for closer coordination between law enforcement and intelligence agencies of both countries.

Both sides agreed to enhance information sharing and joint efforts to tackle emerging threats such as radicalisation, terror financing, and the misuse of technology by extremist groups.

Regional and Global Security Outlook

The dialogue also provided an opportunity for a detailed exchange of views on pressing international issues. Developments in West Asia, particularly their impact on maritime security and global trade routes, were discussed at length. The ongoing situation in Russia-Ukraine was reviewed, with both countries reiterating the need for dialogue and diplomacy as the path to resolution.

Broader regional developments in the Indo-Pacific and concerns related to cyber security and supply chain resilience also formed part of the conversations, highlighting the expanding global dimension of the India-UK partnership.

The MGMM Outlook

The latest strategic dialogue between India and the United Kingdom reflects a clear shift from conventional diplomacy to a more integrated and future-oriented partnership. The emphasis on critical technologies such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum systems signals a shared understanding that economic strength and national security are now deeply interconnected. Initiatives like the semiconductor fabrication facility in Odisha and the Technology Security Initiative show how both nations are moving toward co-development rather than dependency, strengthening resilience in supply chains while positioning themselves competitively in emerging global industries.

At the same time, the growing alignment in defence and security cooperation highlights a pragmatic approach to evolving geopolitical realities. Expanding collaboration in the Indo-Pacific, enhancing counter-terrorism coordination, and addressing challenges like cyber threats and extremist networks demonstrate a partnership that is becoming more action-driven. The consistent progress under the Vision 2035 roadmap suggests a long-term commitment rooted in mutual trust, where both countries are not only responding to current global uncertainties but also actively shaping a stable and innovation-led strategic future together.
