India: An Oasis of Growth Amid Global Turmoil, Says Piyush Goyal

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal says India is emerging as one of the world’s strongest economic performers, with manufacturing, exports, and trusted global partnerships driving its next phase of growth.

At a time when many nations are struggling with slowing growth, geopolitical conflicts, disrupted supply chains, and rising trade uncertainty, India is steadily strengthening its position as a resilient global economy. Speaking at the 66th Annual Session of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) in New Delhi, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described India as “an oasis in the desert” during a period of worldwide economic turbulence.

His remarks reflected growing confidence in India’s economic trajectory, supported by robust GDP growth, expanding industrial production, rising exports, and stronger trade engagement with major economies including the United States and the European Union.

India’s Economy Shows Remarkable Resilience

The global economy continues to face significant challenges. Ongoing regional conflicts, inflationary pressures, volatile energy markets, and disruptions in international shipping have slowed growth across several advanced economies. Despite these headwinds, India has maintained its position as the fastest-growing major economy, demonstrating resilience through strong domestic demand and sustained economic reforms.

Piyush Goyal emphasized that India’s growth is being powered by multiple sectors rather than relying on a single industry. Manufacturing, digital services, infrastructure, agriculture, innovation, and exports are collectively contributing to the country’s expanding economic strength. He noted that India’s recent 7.8 percent GDP growth reflects the capability and collective efforts of its people and industries.

Manufacturing Emerges as the Engine of Growth

Addressing leaders of the automotive component industry, Goyal praised Indian manufacturers for transforming the country into a globally competitive industrial hub. He said the automotive sector has become a shining example of India’s manufacturing capabilities, supplying high-quality components to leading automobile companies across Europe, North America, Asia, and emerging markets.

Over the past decade, India’s manufacturing ecosystem has evolved from low-cost production to advanced engineering and precision manufacturing. Indian companies now produce sophisticated automotive electronics, forged components, electric vehicle parts, and high-performance engineering products that meet international quality standards.

Government initiatives such as Make in India, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, industrial corridors, and logistics improvements have further enhanced the country’s ability to attract domestic and global investment into manufacturing.

India’s Export Ambitions Reach New Heights

India is also witnessing unprecedented growth in exports. During the ACMA session, Goyal expressed confidence that the country’s combined goods and services exports will surpass 825 billion US dollars during the current financial year, bringing India closer to its long-term objective of becoming a trillion-dollar export economy.

The expansion is being driven by engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, information technology, electronics, chemicals, textiles, and automotive products. As global companies diversify their sourcing strategies, Indian exporters are gaining greater access to international markets through improved competitiveness and stronger trade partnerships.

The minister encouraged Indian businesses to think globally by expanding their manufacturing presence overseas while continuing to strengthen production within India.

India–US Trade Partnership Gains Momentum

One of the key highlights of the ACMA event was the growing economic partnership between India and the United States. US Ambassador Sergio Gor stated that both nations are working towards creating a fair, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial trade relationship that allows businesses and technology to move more freely between the two economies.

Negotiations for an interim trade agreement have already progressed through multiple rounds and are expected to eventually expand into a comprehensive India–US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The proposed framework aims to improve market access, strengthen investment, reduce trade barriers, and encourage collaboration in sectors such as automobiles, defence, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and space.

Indian companies have also increased investments in the United States, while several American manufacturers continue expanding their production and research facilities across India, reflecting deepening economic integration between the two democracies.

Trusted Supply Chains Create New Opportunities

Recent global disruptions have highlighted the importance of resilient and diversified supply chains. Multinational corporations are increasingly seeking dependable manufacturing partners capable of ensuring continuity during periods of geopolitical uncertainty. India has emerged as a preferred destination because of its skilled workforce, political stability, expanding infrastructure, competitive manufacturing costs, and large domestic market.

Rather than competing solely on affordability, India is positioning itself as a centre for innovation, design, engineering, and high-value manufacturing. This transition is particularly visible in electric mobility, aerospace, electronics, defence manufacturing, and precision engineering, where Indian firms are steadily moving up the global value chain.

Infrastructure and Digital Growth Strengthen Competitiveness

Beyond traditional industries, India is investing heavily in infrastructure and digital transformation to support long-term economic expansion. Improved highways, dedicated freight corridors, modern ports, digital public infrastructure, and expanding industrial parks have significantly reduced logistics costs and improved the ease of doing business.

The government is also promoting investments in data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence infrastructure, creating new opportunities for employment, innovation, and technological leadership. These initiatives complement India’s broader vision of becoming a globally competitive manufacturing and technology powerhouse over the coming decades.

India’s Growing Global Economic Influence

India’s economic rise is increasingly accompanied by stronger international engagement. Alongside ongoing negotiations with the United States, the country has expanded trade cooperation with several strategic partners through comprehensive economic agreements and investment partnerships. These efforts are opening new markets for Indian products while attracting greater foreign investment into manufacturing, technology, and advanced industries.

As global businesses seek reliable destinations for production and innovation, India’s combination of market scale, skilled talent, policy reforms, and industrial capability continues to enhance its reputation as a trusted global economic partner.

The MGMM Outlook

India’s steady economic performance during a period of global uncertainty reflects the strength of its diversified growth model. Rather than relying on a single sector, the country has built momentum through manufacturing, digital innovation, infrastructure development, agriculture, and expanding exports. As international supply chains continue to shift, India is increasingly being recognised as a dependable partner for global production, advanced engineering, and high-value manufacturing, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

The growing confidence of international businesses and strategic partners also highlights India’s rising influence in the global economy. Stronger trade engagement with countries such as the United States, continued investment in industrial capacity, and initiatives that improve logistics and ease of doing business are creating new opportunities for Indian industries. This trajectory suggests that India is not only strengthening its domestic economy but also emerging as a trusted global hub for manufacturing, technology, and long-term economic collaboration.
