India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue

The Canada leg centres on the inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue with Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne. The discussions are expected to cover macroeconomic developments, financial-sector cooperation, bilateral investment opportunities and shared international priorities.

Canada’s Department of Finance has described the meeting as an opportunity to reinforce economic and financial ties at a time when both countries are seeking to diversify partnerships and build resilient supply chains. Official Canadian figures indicate that total direct and indirect Canadian investment in India surpassed CAD 110 billion in 2024, reflecting the scale of existing long-term capital flows.

Sitharaman is also scheduled to take part in an investment roundtable with leading CEOs and senior representatives from sectors including energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals. Other engagements in Toronto include business interactions linked to opportunities in GIFT City-IFSC, a fireside conversation hosted by the Canadian Club of Toronto and the Canada-India Business Council, one-to-one corporate meetings and interaction with the Indian diaspora.

Pitch for Deeper Investment and Financial Cooperation

During her interactions in Toronto, the Finance Minister has highlighted India as a long-term destination for Canadian institutional capital. She has pointed to the already substantial presence of Canadian pension funds in India and to clear complementarities between the two economies, with India offering scale and growth and Canada contributing long-term capital, institutional expertise and regulatory depth.

Opportunities have been underlined in banking, insurance, fintech, digital finance, infrastructure, clean energy, semiconductors and rare earths. India’s digital public infrastructure, including the Unified Payments Interface, has been presented as an area for possible collaboration with Canadian banks, fintech firms and regulators. The visit also takes place against the backdrop of ongoing efforts towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and recent steps to expand cooperation in energy, critical minerals, technology and resilient supply chains.

United States Programme: Chicago, Asheville and New York

From August 28 to September 2, Sitharaman will travel to Chicago, Asheville and New York. In Chicago, she is scheduled to participate in an investor roundtable, meet CEOs and senior private-sector representatives, interact with the local Indian community and visit the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to discuss startups, technology commercialisation and India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The central diplomatic engagement of the US leg will take place in Asheville, North Carolina, where she will lead the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting on August 31 and September 1. Held under the US G20 presidency, the meeting is expected to focus on global economic growth, financial stability and international financial cooperation.

In New York, the programme includes an investor roundtable, meetings with financial-sector executives and participation in a bell-ringing ceremony at Nasdaq.

Broader Context of the Visit

The nine-day itinerary reflects India’s effort to deepen economic engagement with both Canada and the United States while contributing to multilateral discussions on the global economy. For Canada, the dialogue forms part of a wider push to diversify economic partnerships. For India, it offers a platform to showcase growth prospects, attract long-term capital and strengthen cooperation in priority sectors ranging from finance and technology to energy and critical minerals.

The MGMM Outlook

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s nine-day visit to Canada and the United States reflects India’s growing confidence as a leading global economic partner. Through the inaugural India–Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue, investor meetings, and engagements with business leaders, the visit aims to attract long-term investment while expanding cooperation in sectors such as fintech, clean energy, semiconductors, critical minerals, and digital finance. It also highlights India’s efforts to position initiatives like GIFT City and its digital public infrastructure as models for international collaboration.

The United States leg further strengthens this economic outreach by combining investor engagement with India’s participation in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. As global economies focus on resilient supply chains, financial stability, and innovation-driven growth, the visit reinforces India’s commitment to building stronger partnerships with advanced economies while creating new opportunities for investment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic development.
