Delhi Government Expands Women-Only Bus Services with 50 New Electric Buses for Enhanced Safety and Connectivity

The Delhi government has announced a major initiative to strengthen women’s safety in public transportation by introducing approximately 50 new women-only electric buses. This expansion aims to make daily commutes safer, more convenient, and reliable for women across the national capital, particularly students and working professionals who often travel during peak or off-peak hours.

Current Landscape and Need for Expansion

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) currently operates a limited number of ladies’ special buses on select routes. These services originated earlier and have been maintained on a request-based model. With growing demand for secure travel options, the government is now scaling up the initiative in a more systematic manner. The addition of 50 dedicated buses marks a significant increase in capacity and coverage, addressing long-standing concerns regarding women’s safety during transit.

Key Features and Operational Details

The upcoming buses will be fully electric, low-floor, and air-conditioned, ensuring comfort and accessibility for all passengers, including those with disabilities. Safety enhancements include all-women staff, trained marshals, CCTV surveillance, and panic buttons connected to emergency response systems. These features are designed to create a reassuring environment for female commuters.

Routes will be selected based on high demand, focusing on 20-25 busy corridors such as Central Delhi, ITO, educational institutions, office areas, and zones with limited Metro access. The buses will provide essential last-mile connectivity. Services are planned to run from early morning around 5 AM until late evening up to 11 PM or midnight, catering to diverse schedules. As per the policy, the buses will be reserved exclusively for women, with provisions for mothers traveling with children.

Integration with Green Mobility and Smart Initiatives

All 50 buses will be procured under the Centre’s PM E-DRIVE Scheme, supporting the national push for electric vehicles and sustainable transport. In the first phase, 25 buses will serve Outer Delhi areas, while the other 25 will function as University Special services for female students.

This development aligns with Delhi’s broader vision of expanding its public bus fleet to approximately 14,000 vehicles by 2028-29. Recent additions of 300 electric buses have already raised the electric fleet strength to over 4,800, underscoring steady progress toward cleaner and greener mobility.

Complementing the bus expansion, the government is leveraging data from Saheli Pink Smart Cards to identify high-demand routes. From August 1, 2026, these smart cards will become the primary mode for availing free travel benefits, replacing paper tickets and enabling more efficient, transparent service delivery. Multiple centres have been established across the city to facilitate easy card issuance.
