BJP’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ Drive: What’s Really Planned Ahead of Independence Day

As India prepares to observe its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a circular outlining a planned nationwide ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. The initiative pushes a comprehensive agenda from August 10 to 15, aiming to mobilize grassroots activity across states and districts.

Campaign Timeline and National Directive

A formal circular attributed to BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh specifies that campaign activities will roll out across all states and union territories beginning August 10. These include door‑to‑door outreach, flag distribution, and community programmes culminating in mass flag hoisting from August 13 to 15.

Previous editions of the campaign were officially observed from August 9/11 to 15, with state-level enforcement varying by local authorities. In Rajasthan, for example, the campaign was observed statewide from August 13 to 15, including rallies, concerts, and selfie events.

Organizing Strategy at Local Level

Party units nationwide will engage in door-to-door visits, encouraging every home, business, and institution to hoist the tricolour. The drive also incorporates cleanliness activities, wreath-laying at memorials, and public tributes—particularly on August 14, designated as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. This observance commemorates the trauma of Partition, following guidelines introduced in 2021.

In Uttar Pradesh, BJP workers and leaders are expected to monitor progress at booth levels, while schools and colleges are encouraged to participate actively in associated events.

Public Engagement and Political Overtones

According to state-level reports, including from Maharashtra and Bihar, campaign implementation includes direct contact by party representatives to enlist citizen participation. BJP officials emphasize the symbolic value of involving youth in flag-hoisting to nurture a spirit of patriotism. Though some internal sources suggest the campaign aims to morale-boost workers post-election setbacks, party spokespeople maintain it’s a repetitive effort focused solely on nationalism.

Earlier editions also highlighted a digital angle: citizens were urged to submit selfies with the flag online, though the official portal usage in 2025 remains unclear.

Related Activities in Other Periods: Tiranga Yatras & Controversy

Beyond the Independence Day programme, the BJP organized Tiranga Yatras beginning May 15, 2025, in Rajasthan to honor the armed forces after Operation Sindoor. These yatras covered major divisions, districts, and constituencies, starting at Jaipur’s Albert Hall and spanning throughout the state. Supporters framed the processions as gestures of national solidarity.

Opposition parties criticized the yatras, arguing that such celebrations were prematurely politicized and significantly shorter than earlier campaigns. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav chided the BJP for celebrating ceasefire outcomes rather than actual military victories.

Further controversy emerged in July 2025, when Himachal Pradesh ministers accused BJP workers of disrespecting the national flag during a clash in the Seraj constituency. The act—allegedly involving shoes and black cloth thrown at the flag on a minister's vehicle—sparked claims that the party’s symbolic commitments lack genuine respect.

Looking Ahead

The BJP’s revised circular for August 2025 underscores the plan to intensify grassroots mobilisation through coordinated outreach, mass flag hoisting, and public remembrances tied to Partition history. The design mirrors previous years but is marked by heightened administrative coordination and clearer timing from the party’s top leadership.

Whether viewed as a unifying national gesture or politically pragmatic mobilization, the campaign reflects the BJP’s strategy of merging symbolism with ground-level activity to reaffirm its identity ahead of both Independence Day and future electoral cycles.
