Bharat Forge Partners with FLYING WHALES to Develop Heavy-Lift Airships in India

India's aerospace and defence manufacturing sector has received a significant boost with Bharat Forge signing a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French aerospace company FLYING WHALES to jointly develop and manufacture heavy-lift airships in India. The agreement, signed during the Farnborough International Airshow, marks a major step towards expanding India's capabilities in advanced aviation technology while supporting the country's vision of becoming a global manufacturing hub for high-value aerospace systems.


The partnership combines Bharat Forge's extensive experience in precision engineering and defence manufacturing with FLYING WHALES' expertise in designing next-generation heavy-lift cargo airships. By bringing together these complementary strengths, the collaboration aims to establish India as an important centre for the production of advanced airship platforms that can serve both domestic and international markets.

Building the Future of Heavy-Lift Transportation

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the design, manufacturing, integration, and eventual export of heavy-lift airships from India. The project is expected to focus on sovereign applications, strategic logistics, disaster management, humanitarian assistance, and commercial cargo transportation.


At the centre of the collaboration is the LCA60T, FLYING WHALES' flagship cargo airship currently under development. Unlike conventional cargo aircraft that depend on airports and long runways, the LCA60T has been designed to transport loads of up to 60 tonnes directly to locations where little or no infrastructure exists. This capability could transform the movement of heavy equipment into remote mountainous regions, forests, islands, mining sites, and disaster-hit areas.


The localisation of manufacturing in India is expected to strengthen the country's aerospace ecosystem while encouraging the development of domestic suppliers, component manufacturers, and skilled engineering talent.


Understanding the LCA60T Airship

The LCA60T represents one of the world's most ambitious heavy-lift airship programmes. Using helium as its primary lifting gas, the rigid airship has been designed to transport oversized cargo with greater efficiency while consuming significantly less fuel than many conventional cargo aircraft.


One of its defining features is its ability to hover over a destination and load or unload cargo without requiring airport infrastructure. This makes it particularly suitable for delivering wind turbine components, construction machinery, defence equipment, power transmission structures, and humanitarian relief supplies directly to inaccessible regions.


The aircraft is also expected to reduce logistical challenges in areas where road or rail connectivity is limited, offering industries a practical alternative for transporting extremely large cargo.


Strengthening India's Defence Logistics

The collaboration has significant strategic value for India's defence sector. Transporting heavy military equipment to high-altitude border regions, remote military installations, or island territories often presents considerable logistical challenges. Heavy-lift airships capable of carrying large payloads without the need for conventional airfields could provide greater operational flexibility for the armed forces.


Such aircraft could support the rapid movement of engineering equipment, vehicles, supplies, communication systems, and humanitarian aid during emergencies. Their ability to operate with minimal ground infrastructure makes them valuable assets during natural disasters, where roads, bridges, and airports may be damaged or inaccessible.


As India continues to modernise its defence capabilities, technologies that improve mobility and logistical efficiency are becoming increasingly important.


Supporting Infrastructure and Industrial Development

Beyond defence applications, heavy-lift airships could play an important role in India's infrastructure development. Large-scale projects involving renewable energy, power transmission, mining, oil and gas, and industrial construction often require transporting oversized equipment to remote project locations.


Traditional transport methods frequently involve long road journeys, specialised trailers, or expensive air transport. Heavy-lift airships offer an alternative by enabling direct point-to-point delivery without depending on extensive transport infrastructure. This could reduce project timelines while expanding access to difficult terrain.


The technology also has the potential to support forestry operations, environmental conservation projects, and scientific research in remote regions.

The Bharat Forge–FLYING WHALES partnership aligns closely with India's broader objective of strengthening domestic manufacturing under the "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiatives.
