The political climate in Bihar has heated up after a shocking incident during the Congress-led Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga. Derogatory language was reportedly used against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and even his late mother, sparking a fierce backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the issue from Guwahati, strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “stain on India’s democracy.”
Shah accused the Congress party of encouraging a culture of personal attacks instead of meaningful political debate. He stated that under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, the party had stooped to its “lowest political point,” resorting to vulgar insults rather than presenting policy alternatives to the people.

Shah’s Strong Words Against Congress
Highlighting the global stature of Prime Minister Modi, who has been conferred with the highest civilian honours by 27 countries, Shah said it was shameful that Congress leaders in India repeatedly insulted him. He recalled how Modiji had been labeled in the past with terms such as “maut ka saudagar” (merchant of death), “jehrila saanp” (poisonous snake), “neech aadmi” (lowly man), “Ravan,” and “Bhasmasur.”
Shah argued that such insults not only demeaned the office of the Prime Minister but also exposed the “hate-filled and issueless” nature of Congress politics. He warned Congress leaders that every time they attack Modiji in such a manner, it only strengthens the BJP symbol—the lotus. In his words: “The more you abuse Modiji, the lotus blooms even bigger and touches the skies.”
Demand for Accountability
The Home Minister directly held Rahul Gandhi responsible for the incident, demanding a public apology. He described the Congress campaign as the “Ghuspetiya Bachao Yatra” (Save the Infiltrators March), alleging that its true aim was to protect illegal immigrants for the sake of preserving vote banks. According to Shah, this was a dangerous ploy that could jeopardize national security.
Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also condemned the use of abusive language, calling it “grossly indecent” and unbecoming of a democratic society. BJP leaders and workers staged protests across the state, demanding strict action against those responsible.
Legal Action and Arrests
The controversy quickly escalated beyond political statements. Clashes broke out in Patna between BJP and Congress workers, and police complaints were filed in several districts. Authorities later arrested a 20-year-old youth, Mohammad Rizvi alias Raza, who allegedly hurled the abuses from the stage during the rally.
Congress, however, distanced itself from the controversy. Party leaders claimed that the person involved may not have been affiliated with them, stressing that such indecent language does not represent Congress’s culture. Opposition voices like AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also criticized the language used, but at the same time accused the BJP of using the controversy as a distraction from real issues.
Broader Political Implications
The episode reflects the deepening animosity between India’s two main political rivals. For the BJP, the controversy provides an opportunity to portray Congress as disrespectful, abusive, and disconnected from public decency. For Congress, distancing itself from the remarks has become a tightrope walk, as it faces mounting pressure to hold its cadre accountable while continuing its aggressive campaign against the Modi government.
Political observers note that such incidents damage the quality of democratic debate in India. Instead of focusing on governance, development, and reforms, political discourse often gets reduced to personal insults, eroding public trust in the electoral process.
Conclusion
The abusive remarks against Prime Minister Modi and his late mother have triggered an intense storm in Bihar’s political landscape. Amit Shah’s fiery response, coupled with BJP’s aggressive protests and Nitish Kumar’s condemnation, has further intensified the debate on decency in politics. While legal action has already been initiated, the larger question remains—will India’s political parties rise above insults and abuse to engage in meaningful dialogue?
In the end, Shah’s words capture the BJP’s stance: that every insult hurled at Modiji only strengthens the party’s resolve and fuels its electoral momentum. As Bihar moves deeper into its election season, the controversy may well reshape voter sentiments and set the tone for yet another bitterly fought political battle.
