West Bengal Chief Minister Suspends Three Senior IPS Officers for Alleged Mishandling of RG Kar Case

In a significant step towards administrative accountability, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the suspension of three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in connection with the initial handling of the 2024 RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered against them.

The officers suspended are former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Abhishek Gupta, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Indira Mukherjee. The decision was taken following a fact-finding report submitted by the state’s Chief Secretary and Home Secretary.

Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, the Chief Minister stated that the officers were found to have committed serious lapses, including dereliction of duty, attempting to offer money to the victim’s family, and holding an unauthorised press conference. He emphasised that these actions were aimed at ensuring fairness and transparency in the ongoing process.

The RG Kar Tragedy and Its Aftermath

The horrific incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The discovery of the crime sent shockwaves across the state and the nation, leading to widespread protests by medical professionals, students, and citizens demanding justice and improved safety measures for women in workplaces, particularly in healthcare institutions.

Allegations of delays in police response, evidence tampering, and inadequate security at the hospital further fuelled public discontent. In response to these concerns and following judicial intervention, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which continues to probe the matter. The CBI’s investigation remains independent of the state government’s administrative actions.

Political and Electoral Context

The RG Kar case emerged as a major public issue during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, contested from the Panihati constituency on a BJP ticket and secured a victory by a substantial margin. Her participation highlighted the family’s continued quest for justice.

The suspension of the officers represents an early administrative measure by the new government. Chief Minister Adhikari has indicated that further steps, including the possible formation of a commission with retired High Court judges, may be considered to examine broader issues related to such cases.

CM Adhikari’s Decision on Assembly Constituencies

In a separate announcement on the same day, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari formally resigned from the Nandigram Assembly seat. He has chosen to retain the Bhabanipur constituency, where he had emerged victorious in the recent polls.

Speaking on the matter, he assured the people of Nandigram that he would continue to address their concerns and oversee development work in the area despite vacating the seat. “I took an oath from Bhabanipur. As per rules, I have to vacate one seat. I will continue to look after Nandigram as well. I will not let the people of Nandigram feel that Suvendu Adhikari is absent,” he said.

The MGMM Outlook

The suspension of three senior IPS officers in connection with the initial handling of the RG Kar Medical College case marks a significant moment in West Bengal’s political and administrative landscape. By initiating disciplinary action, the state government has signaled a stronger emphasis on institutional accountability and public transparency, particularly in cases that have triggered widespread public outrage. The move also reflects the growing expectation that law enforcement agencies must be held responsible not only for criminal investigations but also for procedural integrity and public trust.

The RG Kar case continues to resonate far beyond the courtroom, symbolising larger concerns around women’s safety, police accountability, and systemic reform within public institutions. With the CBI investigation progressing independently and political attention firmly fixed on the issue, the developments underscore how justice today is increasingly tied to both legal outcomes and administrative responsibility. The government’s early actions suggest that restoring public confidence will depend on sustained reforms, transparent governance, and a clear commitment to preventing such institutional failures in the future.
