US Approves $428 Million Sustainment Package for India's Apache Helicopters and M777 Howitzers, Strengthening Bilateral Defence Partnership

The United States has cleared two significant Foreign Military Sales packages worth a combined $428.2 million to provide long-term sustainment support for key Indian military platforms. The approvals, notified by the US State Department on May 18-19, 2026, cover India's AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. This development reflects the continued growth of strategic defence cooperation between India and the United States.

Details of the Apache Helicopter Support Package

The first package, valued at approximately $198.2 million, focuses on follow-on sustainment services for India's fleet of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. It includes engineering, technical, and logistics support from the US government and contractors, along with technical data, publications, personnel training, and other programme-related elements. Boeing and Lockheed Martin are the principal contractors involved. These services will help maintain the operational readiness of the advanced attack helicopters, renowned for their firepower, precision strike capabilities, and effectiveness in diverse terrains.

Details of the M777 Howitzer Support Package

The second package, estimated at $230 million, provides comprehensive long-term sustainment for India's M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. This encompasses spares, repairs, ancillary equipment, training, technical assistance, field service representatives, depot-level maintenance, and logistics support. BAE Systems serves as the primary contractor. The M777's lightweight design, enabled by extensive use of titanium, makes it ideal for rapid deployment in challenging mountainous regions.

India's Existing Capabilities and Operational Relevance

India currently operates 28 AH-64E Apache helicopters, with 22 serving the Indian Air Force and six with the Indian Army. These platforms, often described as "tanks in the air," are equipped with Hellfire missiles, rockets, and a 30mm chain gun, offering formidable anti-armour and close air support roles. They have proven especially valuable for operations along high-altitude borders.

For the artillery segment, India acquired 145 M777 howitzers through a 2016 contract. These 155mm/39-calibre guns have been inducted across multiple regiments and deployed extensively in northern and eastern border areas due to their air-transportable nature and mobility in rugged terrain. The sustainment packages will ensure these systems remain combat-effective for years to come.

Strategic Importance in the Indo-Pacific Context

The US State Department emphasised that these sales support American foreign policy and national security objectives by reinforcing the US-India strategic partnership. India, recognised as a Major Defence Partner, plays a crucial role in promoting stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. The packages are expected to enhance India's ability to address current and emerging security challenges without affecting the regional military balance or US defence readiness.

This move builds on a decade of expanding defence ties, including acquisitions such as C-17 Globemasters, P-8I aircraft, and Chinook helicopters, alongside joint exercises and technology collaborations. It also aligns with broader efforts to boost interoperability between the two forces.
