Uber to Establish Its First Data Centre in India Through Strategic Partnership with Adani Group

In a significant boost to India’s growing stature as a global technology and innovation hub, ride-hailing and mobility giant Uber has announced plans to set up its first data centre in the country in collaboration with the Adani Group. The facility is expected to become operational later this year and will play a pivotal role in testing and deploying advanced technological solutions.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi made the announcement following a meeting with Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad. Sharing the development on X, Khosrowshahi stated, “As India fast emerges as a leading innovation hub for Uber, we are setting up our first data centre in the country with the Adani Group to test and deploy our tech.” He further emphasised that the initiative would enable the company to “build at scale, from India, for the world.”

India’s Rising Prominence in Uber’s Global Strategy

India has evolved into one of Uber’s most vital markets worldwide, particularly in the areas of engineering, product development, and innovation. The company maintains substantial tech teams across major cities, with Bengaluru serving as one of its largest global engineering hubs outside the United States. Its Hyderabad Centre of Excellence further strengthens this presence, employing hundreds of skilled professionals.

This data centre project aligns with Uber’s broader commitment to the Indian market. During his ongoing week-long visit to India, Khosrowshahi has engaged with senior government officials, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, to outline the company’s long-term investment plans. These discussions have focused on mobility solutions, job creation, digital infrastructure, and the shift towards electric vehicles. Notably, the number of drivers and earners on Uber’s platform in India has quadrupled since 2022, reflecting strong growth momentum.

Strengthening Ties with the Adani Group

The new collaboration builds upon an existing partnership between Uber and the Adani Group. In 2024, the two organisations worked together to integrate Uber’s electric vehicles into the Adani One platform and enhance mobility services at Adani-managed airports. This data centre initiative represents a natural progression, merging Uber’s technological capabilities with Adani’s extensive expertise in infrastructure development.

Adani’s Ambitious Digital Infrastructure Vision

The partnership fits seamlessly into the Adani Group’s expansive push into digital infrastructure. Through AdaniConneX, its joint venture with EdgeConneX, the group is developing a national hyperscale data centre platform. Adani has outlined plans to invest up to $100 billion by 2035 in renewable-energy-powered, AI-ready data centres, aiming for 5 GW of capacity. This builds on an existing pipeline and includes major projects in partnership with global technology leaders.

Such investments underscore India’s emergence as a preferred destination for data centre development, driven by surging demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.

A Forward-Looking Collaboration for India’s Digital Future

This landmark initiative highlights the growing synergy between global technology innovators and Indian infrastructure powerhouses. By establishing local data infrastructure, Uber aims to achieve lower latency, enhanced data compliance, and greater agility in product development tailored to both Indian and international needs.

The MGMM Outlook

Uber’s decision to establish its first data centre in India in partnership with Uber and Adani Group reflects India’s growing importance as a strategic global technology and innovation hub. This move signals increasing confidence in India’s digital infrastructure, engineering talent, and expanding role in advanced technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and large-scale data operations. It also reinforces the country’s position as a preferred destination for multinational companies looking to build and scale future-ready technological capabilities.

The collaboration further highlights the strength of partnerships between global technology leaders and Indian infrastructure giants in shaping the country’s digital future. By combining Uber’s technological expertise with Adani’s ambitious investments in digital infrastructure and renewable-powered data centres, this initiative is expected to accelerate innovation, create high-value employment opportunities, and strengthen India’s long-term ambitions of becoming a globally competitive digital economy.
