President Droupadi Murmu Unveils Landmark Women-Centric Initiatives in Delhi

In a significant step toward strengthening women’s empowerment in the national capital, Droupadi Murmu inaugurated a series of welfare initiatives in New Delhi under the banner “Sashakt Naari, Samriddh Delhi.” The event, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, marked one of the most comprehensive efforts by the Delhi government to enhance women’s mobility, financial independence, and social security.

Addressing the gathering, the President emphasized that empowering women is fundamental to national progress. She highlighted that when women gain access to education, mobility, and financial resources, the entire society benefits. The newly launched schemes reflect a coordinated effort to address both immediate needs and long-term empowerment goals for women and girls across Delhi.

Saheli Pink Smart Card: Transforming Women’s Mobility

A key highlight of the launch was the introduction of the Saheli Pink Smart Card, a modern mobility solution designed to ensure seamless and secure public transport access for women. The card is integrated with the National Common Mobility Card framework, enabling contactless travel across Delhi’s public transportation network, including buses and metro services.

The initiative replaces the earlier paper-based free ticket system with a digital, Aadhaar-linked smart card. By formalizing access through technology, the government aims to improve safety, reduce misuse, and provide reliable transport support. Enhanced mobility is expected to directly impact women’s participation in education, employment, and entrepreneurship by lowering commuting costs and increasing convenience.

Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: Securing the Future of the Girl Child

Another cornerstone initiative unveiled during the event was the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana. Designed to promote the financial security and educational advancement of girls, the scheme provides structured financial deposits at various stages of a girl’s life. These deposits, accumulated over time with interest, are expected to exceed ₹1 lakh by the time the beneficiary turns 21.

The programme builds upon earlier girl child welfare models but expands the financial commitment and oversight mechanisms. By linking financial support to educational milestones, the initiative aims to reduce dropout rates and encourage higher education. It also extends support to girls residing in childcare institutions, ensuring that vulnerable sections are not excluded from long-term economic security.

Meri Punji, Mera Adhikar: Strengthening Direct Benefit Transfers

Under the Meri Punji, Mera Adhikar initiative, the Delhi government has accelerated direct benefit transfers to beneficiaries of previous women-focused schemes. Over ₹100 crore has reportedly been credited directly into bank accounts of eligible girls and families.

This approach underscores the emphasis on transparency and financial inclusion. By utilizing the Direct Benefit Transfer system, the government ensures that funds reach intended beneficiaries without intermediaries. The initiative not only reinforces trust in welfare systems but also promotes banking access and financial literacy among women and their families.

Festival LPG Support Scheme: Easing Household Burdens

Recognizing the economic pressures faced by families, particularly during festive seasons, the government has also introduced a support mechanism for clean cooking fuel. Eligible ration card holders will receive the equivalent financial benefit of two LPG cylinders annually, timed around major festivals such as Holi and Diwali.

This measure seeks to reduce household expenses while promoting continued use of cleaner fuel alternatives. By easing the cost burden, the scheme contributes both to women’s well-being and to public health objectives, as women are primary stakeholders in household cooking and energy use.

A Broader Vision for Inclusive Growth

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the initiatives as a transformative milestone aimed at strengthening dignity, independence, and opportunity for women in the capital. The combination of mobility access, financial planning for girls, direct economic transfers, and household cost relief represents a multi-dimensional strategy rather than isolated welfare measures.

Together, these schemes reflect a governance model focused on structured support, digital integration, and long-term social impact. By aligning welfare delivery with technology and accountability, the Delhi government aims to set a benchmark for women-centric development in urban India.

The MGMM Outlook

The initiatives unveiled by Droupadi Murmu under the “Sashakt Naari, Samriddh Delhi” banner signal a structured and technology-driven shift in how women’s empowerment is being implemented in the national capital. The introduction of the Saheli Pink Smart Card modernizes free public transport access by integrating it with a digital mobility framework, reducing leakages and enhancing safety. Alongside this, the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana creates a long-term financial safety net for the girl child by linking monetary support to educational milestones, ensuring that empowerment is not symbolic but backed by tangible economic security. The scale of direct benefit transfers under Meri Punji, Mera Adhikar further reflects a governance model built on transparency, banking inclusion, and accountability.

The broader impact of these measures lies in their layered approach—mobility, financial independence, and household support working together rather than in isolation. Festival-linked LPG assistance addresses immediate economic pressures, while structured savings for girls invest in future stability. This integrated design strengthens dignity and opportunity for women across income groups. When mobility becomes seamless, finances become secure, and welfare delivery becomes direct and digital, the foundation for women-led development grows stronger, reinforcing inclusive urban growth and long-term social transformation.
