Two terrorists were killed during an overnight counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, where security forces launched a coordinated action following intelligence inputs about the presence of suspected terrorists. The operation, codenamed Operation Sohan, was conducted by the Indian Army’s White Knight Corps, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

According to the Army, the operation began during the intervening night of September 16 and 17 in the Brattal area of Udhampur. Security forces were operating under difficult conditions, including challenging terrain, poor visibility and adverse weather. Despite these difficulties, the joint forces established a cordon and launched a targeted operation in the area.

Gunfight in the Forested Area

The operation was carried out in the remote forested areas around Brattal Sohan and Khubban in Majalta. According to officials, security personnel detected suspicious movement before launching a search operation. The search subsequently turned into an encounter after the suspected terrorists opened fire on the security forces.

The exchange of fire continued through the night, with security forces maintaining the cordon around the area. Reinforcements were also deployed as the operation progressed. By Thursday, two terrorists had been killed, while security forces continued combing the surrounding forest to ensure that no other threats remained.

Weapons and Ammunition Recovered

Arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Later reports from Jammu and Kashmir Police said the recovered material included an AK assault rifle with four magazines, an M4 carbine with three magazines, a Glock pistol with two magazines and four grenades.

The identities and affiliations of the two terrorists were initially being ascertained. Subsequent reports citing Jammu and Kashmir Police identified them as Saddam and Mustafa and said they were Pakistani nationals affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). These details form part of the ongoing investigation into the operation and the network associated with the two men.

Search and Surveillance Operations Continue

The killing of the two terrorists has not brought the operation to an immediate close. Security forces are continuing search and surveillance activities across the surrounding forested terrain to check for possible additional terrorists, weapons or hideouts.

The difficult geography of the area makes such operations particularly demanding. Security personnel are also using surveillance equipment, including drones, to monitor the wider area and support the ongoing search.

The operation also reflects the continuing coordination between different security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir. The Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF have worked together in the operation, combining intelligence inputs, ground forces and surveillance capabilities.

Continued Vigilance in Jammu and Kashmir

The latest encounter comes amid continued counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in forested and mountainous areas where security forces have been monitoring suspected terrorist movement. Intelligence-led operations are being used to locate and disrupt such activity before it can develop into a larger security threat.

The Udhampur operation also highlights the operational challenges presented by remote terrain and changing weather conditions. Maintaining surveillance after an encounter is an important part of ensuring that the area is thoroughly searched and that any remaining threat is identified.

The MGMM Outlook

Operation Sohan highlights the importance of timely intelligence, coordinated action and sustained vigilance in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The joint involvement of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF enabled security forces to respond effectively despite difficult terrain, poor visibility and adverse weather conditions. The recovery of assault rifles, ammunition and grenades also provides important material for investigators examining the terrorist network operating in the region.

The continued search and surveillance after the encounter remains significant, as forested and mountainous areas can provide hiding places and logistical routes for terrorists. The use of drones and coordinated ground operations can help security agencies identify possible hideouts, weapons caches or additional threats. Operation Sohan therefore underlines the need for sustained vigilance and close coordination among security agencies to prevent terrorist activity and maintain security in vulnerable areas.
