New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is set to visit India from March 16 to 20, making it his first trip to the country since assuming office.
Luxon has consistently highlighted India's economic potential and acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand, stating in October last year that he is, “a big fan of India… It’s a country I love, admire tremendously.”

The visit takes place amid rising tensions between Wellington and Beijing, as New Zealand aims to broaden its economic and diplomatic relationships.
Luxon, who has spoken highly of India in the past, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on March 17 to discuss trade, defense cooperation, and strengthening people-to-people connections. PM Modi will host a luncheon in his honor, and Luxon will also meet President Droupadi Murmu.
This trip underscores New Zealand’s commitment to enhancing ties with India against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics.
Luxon’s Agenda: Highlights of Key Events
Luxon will serve as the Chief Guest at the 10th Raisina Dialogue, a prominent geopolitical conference in New Delhi, where he will deliver the keynote address. He will also travel to Mumbai on March 19-20 for discussions with Indian business leaders.
The visit underscores New Zealand’s efforts to strengthen trade and diplomatic ties with India, particularly amid growing concerns over economic reliance on China and regional security issues. While China remains New Zealand’s largest trading partner, Luxon’s government has expressed a desire to diversify economic relationships, especially within the Indo-Pacific.
New Zealand’s engagement with India has been relatively limited in recent years, but both nations are now seeking to revitalize their partnership. Officials highlight opportunities in technology, education, agriculture, and defense collaboration.
Luxon’s visit is expected to pave the way for deeper trade negotiations and investment opportunities, signaling New Zealand’s strategic shift towards closer ties with India.
