INS Trikand Executes Heroic Rescue in Gulf of Aden

On October 18, 2025, the Cameroon-flagged LPG tanker MV Falcon suffered a massive explosion approximately 113 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen. The vessel, traveling from Sohar Port in Oman to Djibouti, had around 15% of its cargo ignited by the blast. The 26-member crew, consisting of 25 Indian nationals and one British national, were forced to abandon ship amid the fire and chaos. Nearby merchant vessels rescued 24 crew members, while two crew members tragically lost their lives.

Swift Response of INS Trikand

The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Trikand, deployed for maritime security operations in the region, responded immediately to the distress call. Upon arrival, the ship coordinated with a civil tug hired by the tanker’s operator to contain the fire. A specialized team of firefighters and medical personnel from INS Trikand boarded the damaged tanker, navigating hazardous conditions, intense heat, and toxic fumes. The team recovered the remains of the two missing crew members and handed them over to the Indian Embassy in Djibouti, demonstrating exceptional professionalism under extreme circumstances.

Strategic and Security Context

The Gulf of Aden and Red Sea regions have experienced repeated threats to commercial shipping due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, including previous attacks by Houthi rebels. However, officials clarified that this particular incident was not linked to Houthi activity. The tanker, loaded with LPG, posed a significant risk of secondary explosions, prompting maritime agencies, including the European Union Naval Force, to issue warnings and ensure nearby vessels maintained a safe distance.

Salvage and Ongoing Operations

Following the firefighting operation, a private salvage company was tasked with securing MV Falcon. As of October 20, 2025, firefighting and salvage teams continued to work to fully extinguish the flames and stabilize the vessel. The operation highlights the complexity of maritime emergencies, where rapid coordination between naval forces and commercial operators is crucial to prevent further loss of life and property.

The MGMM Outlook

On October 18, 2025, the Cameroon-flagged LPG tanker MV Falcon suffered a devastating explosion in the Gulf of Aden, putting 26 crew members, including 25 Indians, in immediate danger. The fire ignited a portion of the tanker’s cargo, forcing the crew to abandon ship amid intense chaos. While nearby merchant vessels rescued most of the crew, two lives were tragically lost. The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Trikand, already deployed in the region for maritime security, responded swiftly, coordinating with the tanker’s civil tug and dispatching specialized teams of firefighters and medical personnel. Navigating extreme heat and toxic fumes, INS Trikand’s crew recovered the two missing crew members and ensured their handover to the Indian Embassy in Djibouti, demonstrating exceptional courage and professionalism.

This incident also highlights the broader security challenges in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, regions prone to maritime threats amid geopolitical tensions. Although officials confirmed that the explosion was not linked to Houthi activity, the tanker’s LPG cargo posed severe risks of secondary explosions, requiring immediate and coordinated action from naval and commercial operators. The ongoing firefighting and salvage operations underscore the complexity of maritime emergencies and the critical role of rapid response in minimizing loss of life and property. The heroic actions of INS Trikand reflect India’s commitment to maritime safety and its readiness to act decisively in safeguarding international waters.
