On August 26, 2025, the Indian Navy achieved a landmark in its modernization journey with the commissioning of two advanced Nilgiri-class stealth frigates—INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri—at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. This occasion marked the first time that two frontline surface combatants were inducted simultaneously, reflecting India’s growing prowess in indigenous warship design and construction.

Project 17A: Advancing Indigenous Naval Capabilities
Both frigates are part of Project 17 Alpha (P-17A), a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the Indian Navy’s surface combatant fleet. Project 17A focuses on building seven advanced stealth guided-missile frigates with cutting-edge design and operational capabilities. Constructed using modular integrated construction techniques, these ships demonstrate faster assembly without compromising on quality. INS Udaygiri was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), while INS Himgiri was constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), reflecting India’s shipbuilding expertise across multiple facilities.
Stealth Design and Performance Enhancements
The Nilgiri-class frigates showcase modern stealth features, including a flush deck, sloped superstructure, and infrared suppression systems, which significantly reduce their radar and heat signatures. These design improvements make the vessels harder to detect, increasing survivability in high-threat maritime environments. The frigates are equipped with Combined Diesel and Gas (CODOG) propulsion systems, using General Electric LM2500+ gas turbines and MAN Diesel engines, enabling them to reach speeds up to 32 knots with a range of 5,500 nautical miles at cruising speeds of 16–18 knots. This combination ensures both high-speed maneuverability and long-range endurance.
Advanced Weaponry and Combat Systems
INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri are outfitted with a formidable arsenal, enabling them to undertake multi-dimensional warfare operations. They carry supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles, Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles, torpedo launchers, and RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers. In addition, a 76mm naval gun and AK-630M close-in weapon systems provide close-range defense. These capabilities allow the ships to operate effectively in anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare scenarios, making them versatile and formidable assets for the Indian Navy.
Cutting-Edge Sensors and Electronic Warfare
Beyond weaponry, the Nilgiri-class frigates feature advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems that significantly enhance situational awareness. These include the IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR S-band AESA radar, Indra Lanza-N L-band air surveillance radar, BEL HUMSA-NG sonar, and the DRDO ‘Shakti’ electronic warfare suite. Complementing these systems are Kavach decoy launchers and Maareech torpedo countermeasure systems. Together, these technologies ensure that the frigates can operate effectively in complex and contested maritime environments while countering modern threats.
Strategic Significance
The commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its naval capabilities and achieving self-reliance in defense technology. These frigates not only enhance operational readiness but also signal India’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. By adding these technologically advanced warships to its fleet, the Indian Navy strengthens its ability to protect maritime interests, secure sea lanes, and maintain strategic deterrence in an increasingly contested oceanic environment.
Conclusion
The induction of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri marks a milestone in India’s journey toward naval modernization and indigenous defense production. Equipped with advanced stealth, propulsion, weaponry, and sensor systems, these frigates exemplify India’s growing maritime strength and technological self-reliance. As the Indian Navy continues to expand and modernize its fleet, the Nilgiri-class frigates will play a pivotal role in ensuring maritime security and reinforcing India’s strategic presence across the Indo-Pacific.
