India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-1 Short-Range Ballistic Missile, Strengthening Strategic Readiness

In a display of operational preparedness, India’s Strategic Forces Command successfully conducted a test launch of the nuclear-capable Agni-1 short-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the missile performed flawlessly, meeting all technical and operational parameters during the flight.


This routine exercise forms part of regular training drills aimed at ensuring the reliability and effectiveness of India’s missile systems. Such tests help maintain a high level of readiness within the country’s credible minimum deterrence posture.

Specifications and Capabilities of Agni-1

The Agni-1 is a single-stage, solid-propellant ballistic missile developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Measuring approximately 15 metres in length and weighing around 12,000 kg at launch, the missile features a one-metre diameter and offers a strike range of 700 to 1,200 kilometres. It can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg, making it suitable for both conventional and nuclear warheads.


Introduced into service in the late 2000s, the Agni-1 stands out for its road and rail mobility, which enhances its survivability and rapid deployment capabilities. As a key asset in India’s land-based nuclear deterrent, it plays a vital role in addressing regional security requirements.


Broader Context of the Agni Series

The Agni family represents the cornerstone of India’s ballistic missile programme. Earlier this month, on May 8, 2026, the country successfully tested an advanced Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha. This test demonstrated the ability to deliver multiple warheads to separate targets, marking another important step in strengthening India’s strategic options.
