India Steps Into Global 6G Race, Joins US and 24 Nations in Security Initiative

India has taken another significant step towards shaping the future of global telecommunications by joining the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative focused on secure, resilient and innovative 6G networks. The move places India among a group of countries seeking to influence the technological standards, security principles and deployment strategies that will guide the next generation of wireless connectivity.
The development comes at a time when 6G is gradually emerging as a major area of technological competition. While commercial 6G networks are still years away, countries are already working on research, standards, spectrum requirements and security frameworks. India's participation gives it an opportunity to contribute to these discussions at an early stage.

India Joins US-Led 6G Initiative
The initiative, called the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, brings together 26 governments, including India and the United States. Its broad objective is to promote next-generation networks that are secure, interoperable and resilient while supporting technological innovation and global competitiveness.
India's participation follows discussions between Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial. Their discussions covered 6G as well as other strategic technology areas, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence and data centres.
The initiative is particularly important because the development of 6G will involve more than simply achieving higher internet speeds. The countries involved will also have to address questions surrounding network security, trusted technology supply chains, interoperability and the growing role of artificial intelligence in telecommunications.
Why 6G Is Becoming Strategically Important
6G is expected to represent a major evolution from today's 5G networks. Beyond faster data transmission and lower latency, future networks are expected to support advanced applications involving artificial intelligence, immersive digital technologies, autonomous systems, smart infrastructure and large-scale machine-to-machine communication.
The technology is also expected to bring communication and sensing capabilities closer together and make greater use of both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. This could eventually allow connectivity to reach areas that are difficult to serve through conventional telecom infrastructure. India's own 6G roadmap identifies intelligent, secure and ubiquitous connectivity as important objectives.
As more critical services become dependent on digital networks, security will become increasingly important. A disruption or vulnerability in future telecommunications infrastructure could potentially affect industries, transportation, public services and other essential systems. This explains why security and resilience are already becoming central to international 6G discussions.
India Has Been Preparing for 6G
India's participation in the international initiative builds on work already underway through the Bharat 6G Mission. The country's Bharat 6G Vision, released in 2023, aims to make India a frontline contributor to the design, development and deployment of 6G technologies by 2030.
The Bharat 6G Alliance has emerged as an important part of this effort by bringing together telecom companies, equipment manufacturers, startups, research institutions and academia. As of July 2026, the alliance had expanded to 90 members and established working groups covering 6G technologies, spectrum, applications, devices, components and sustainability.
This ecosystem is intended to strengthen domestic research and innovation while encouraging greater collaboration between Indian organisations and international technology partners. It also gives Indian companies and researchers a platform to participate in the development of technologies that could eventually become part of global telecom standards.
Building Indigenous 6G Capabilities
India is also increasing its investment in indigenous telecom research. According to the government, 104 projects worth ₹271 crore had been approved under the Telecom Technology Development Fund for research and development related to 6G as of February 2026. The government has also established a spectrum roadmap to provide greater clarity on potential spectrum availability for future 6G services.
India is simultaneously seeking a larger role in global 6G intellectual property and standardisation. The government has set an ambition of securing a 10% share of global 6G patents, reflecting an effort to move beyond being a large telecom market and become a technology contributor.
The emphasis on indigenous research is significant because technological leadership in 6G will depend not only on network deployment but also on patents, semiconductor capabilities, telecom equipment, software, standards and research expertise.
From 5G Expansion to 6G Leadership
India's rapid 5G expansion provides an important foundation for its 6G ambitions. The experience gained from deploying large-scale 5G infrastructure, developing domestic telecom equipment and expanding digital connectivity can support the country's transition towards more advanced networks.
However, 6G will require considerably deeper research and development. Technologies such as AI-native networks, advanced spectrum use, satellite integration and next-generation network architectures will require cooperation between government, industry, universities and research institutions.
India's growing participation in international 6G initiatives can therefore complement its domestic programmes by connecting Indian research and industry with global technology ecosystems.
A Wider Technology Partnership
India's inclusion in the initiative also highlights the growing importance of technology in its international partnerships. Cooperation with the United States and other technologically advanced countries is increasingly extending beyond traditional trade and investment to areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
For India, being part of early 6G discussions could help ensure that its interests are reflected as international standards and security frameworks take shape. It can also create opportunities for Indian startups, researchers and telecom companies to collaborate with global partners.
At the same time, 6G remains a developing technology and commercial deployment is still some years away. The immediate importance of India's participation therefore lies in research, cooperation, standardisation and the shaping of future policy rather than in an immediate nationwide 6G rollout.

Although commercial 6G services are still several years away, the groundwork being laid today could give India a stronger position in the secure, resilient and technologically advanced digital ecosystem expected to emerge in the 2030s.
