India's merchandise exports have recorded strong growth in the first four months of the financial year 2026-27 despite continued uncertainty in the global economy. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that merchandise exports have grown by nearly 15 percent, highlighting the resilience of India's export sector amid geopolitical tensions, disruptions in international shipping routes, and fluctuations in global trade.
The minister stated that despite the difficult global environment, Indian exporters have continued to perform well, reflecting the country's expanding manufacturing capabilities and growing presence in international markets.

Exports Remain Resilient Amid Global Headwinds
Speaking at the Late Shri J.R.D. Tata Memorial Lecture 2026, Piyush Goyal said India's merchandise exports have maintained strong momentum even as the global trading environment remains uncertain. He noted that ongoing geopolitical conflicts, disruptions in supply chains, and challenges affecting major shipping routes have not significantly slowed India's export performance.
According to the minister, India's export sector has shown its ability to adapt to changing global conditions, allowing the country to maintain growth despite external pressures.
Red Sea Crisis Continues to Impact Global Trade
One of the major challenges facing international trade is the continuing disruption in the Red Sea region. Security concerns have forced several shipping companies to divert vessels through longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing transportation costs and delivery times.
The situation has affected exporters worldwide, including those in India, by raising logistics expenses and creating uncertainty in international trade. Exporters have also expressed concerns regarding delays in shipments, rising freight charges, and possible disruptions in supply chains if the situation continues.
Free Trade Agreements Offer New Opportunities
Piyush Goyal highlighted the importance of India's expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in supporting export growth. He noted that these agreements are opening new markets for Indian products and improving access for exporters across various sectors.
Industry estimates suggest that exports to India's new FTA partner countries could witness substantial growth over the coming years, strengthening the country's position in global trade and creating fresh opportunities for businesses.
Focus on Innovation and Competitiveness
The Commerce Minister stressed that maintaining export growth would require continuous improvements in quality, innovation, and manufacturing competitiveness. He encouraged industries to invest more in research and development while adopting advanced technologies to enhance productivity and meet global standards.
He also emphasized the importance of strengthening India's manufacturing ecosystem so that domestic industries remain competitive in international markets despite evolving global challenges.
The MGMM Outlook
India's sustained growth in merchandise exports despite global geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions reflects the increasing resilience of its manufacturing and trade ecosystem. At a time when international shipping routes remain under pressure due to the Red Sea crisis and global demand faces uncertainty, India's ability to maintain export momentum demonstrates the benefits of policy support, expanding industrial capacity, and the adaptability of Indian businesses. The government's continued emphasis on strengthening manufacturing and diversifying export destinations has helped the country navigate external challenges more effectively.
The expansion of Free Trade Agreements, coupled with a stronger focus on innovation, quality, and technological advancement, has the potential to further enhance India's global competitiveness. As businesses continue to invest in higher-value manufacturing and explore new international markets, India's export sector is well-positioned to contribute significantly to economic growth, job creation, and the country's long-term objective of becoming a leading global manufacturing and trading hub.
