India has reached a significant milestone in its aerospace and defence sector with the successful maiden test flight of the first indigenously assembled Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft. The aircraft took off from the Tata-Airbus Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat, on June 10, 2026, marking a proud moment in the nation's journey towards greater self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

Background of the C-295 Programme

In September 2021, India entered into a landmark agreement valued at approximately $2.52 billion for the acquisition of 56 C-295 aircraft to modernise the Indian Air Force's (IAF) ageing fleet of Avro-748 transport planes. Under this partnership between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the initial 16 aircraft were supplied in fly-away condition from Airbus facilities in Spain. The remaining 40 aircraft are being manufactured entirely in India at the dedicated facility in Vadodara.

The Vadodara FAL was inaugurated in October 2024, establishing India's first private-sector final assembly line for military aircraft. This facility has developed a comprehensive ecosystem involving the production of detail parts, sub-assemblies, and complete aircraft, supported by a network of Indian suppliers.

The Maiden Test Flight and Programme Progress

The first India-assembled C-295 rolled out from the Vadodara facility earlier in 2026, setting the stage for the recent test flight. Airbus Defence and Space described the maiden flight as a crucial step in the post-production testing process, paving the way for delivery of the first fully indigenous aircraft to the IAF later this year. The programme aims for full operational ramp-up by August 2031.

This development reflects the dedicated collaboration among Airbus, TASL, and numerous Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that are contributing components and expertise across the country. The programme has already onboarded 37 Indian suppliers and certified multiple special processes, creating thousands of skilled jobs and building a robust domestic aerospace supply chain.

The C-295 is a versatile twin-engine turboprop tactical transport aircraft renowned for its reliability and multi-role capabilities. It can carry up to 9 tonnes of payload or approximately 70 troops, with excellent short take-off and landing (STOL) performance even from unprepared airstrips. The aircraft features a pressurised cabin, advanced avionics, and fuel-efficient Pratt & Whitney engines that support long endurance missions.

Its operational flexibility makes it ideal for a wide range of tasks, including troop and cargo transport, humanitarian assistance, medical evacuation, surveillance, and maritime patrol. These attributes align well with the diverse operational needs of the Indian armed forces in varied terrains and conditions.

Strategic and Economic Significance

The C-295 programme exemplifies India's commitment to developing a strong domestic defence industrial base through international partnerships and private sector leadership. By localising over 85% of the structural work and final assembly, along with the manufacturing of more than 13,000 detail parts in India, the initiative is enhancing technological expertise, promoting innovation, and contributing to economic growth in the sector.
