India is transforming its role in global telecommunications from a technology adopter to a leader and standards-setter in 6G networks. At the recently held News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized that India is now “sitting at the table where 6G standards are being set”, a historic shift for the country.
Scindia pointed out that in earlier generations like 3G and 4G, India largely followed global trends in adoption and deployment. However, with 5G, India achieved one of the fastest rollout rates worldwide and is now aiming even higher with 6G.

Bharat 6G Alliance: From Vision to Global Collaboration
The cornerstone of India’s 6G strategy is the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) — a coalition of Indian and international companies, researchers and policymakers. What began as a group of around 15 members has now grown to over 100 participants from around 30 countries including the UK, US, Brazil and several African nations. Through this alliance, India is building a global collaborative ecosystem focused on the development, standards and deployment of next-generation communications technology.
According to Scindia, proposals from the Bharat 6G Alliance such as ensuring ubiquitous connectivity across the globe are now being accepted and incorporated by international standard-setting bodies like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
This shift reflects India’s ambition not just to use new technology, but to actively shape how 6G is defined and regulated internationally.
India at the Forefront of 6G Standards and Policy
Recent developments show India is now part of important global discussions on future networks. For the first time, the country is participating directly in international forums where 6G protocols and standards are debated and decided, marking a significant evolution in its telecom role.
This enhanced global presence comes alongside India’s ongoing commitments to align 6G ambitions with national priorities, including spectrum policy, domestic R&D and policy frameworks that support innovation and security. Earlier discussions by the Telecom Minister underscored that India is also placing spectrum policy and domestic research and development at the heart of its 6G strategy.
Emerging Partnerships and Global Engagement
India’s 6G momentum isn’t limited to domestic alliances. In recent months, it has joined hands with the European Union’s 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) to further collaborate on future telecom architecturesa step that opens doors to deeper cooperation on specifications, research and harmonized standards across regions.
Representatives from India’s telecom ecosystem, including policymakers and industry leaders, are also set to play central roles at major global events such as Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona, where India will showcase its 5G/6G innovation ecosystem and strengths in telecom manufacturing and research.
Rapid 5G Growth as Foundation for 6G Leadership
India’s ongoing 5G expansion provides the groundwork for the leap to 6G. Recent data shows that India’s 5G user base has grown rapidly, reaching several hundred million subscribers placing it among the largest 5G markets worldwide. This scale of adoption, combined with expanding network infrastructure, gives India a strong practical base from which to innovate future networks.
This momentum from widespread 5G deployment to active participation in shaping 6G standards signals to global partners that India is emerging as a credible and influential voice in next-generation connectivity.
The MGMM Outlook
India is rapidly transitioning from a passive adopter of telecom technologies to an active architect of the global 6G framework. At the News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted that India is now participating directly in global 6G standard-setting discussions a space once dominated by established tech powers. Unlike the 3G and 4G eras, where India followed global developments, the swift nationwide rollout of 5G has laid a strong technological and infrastructural foundation for 6G ambitions. The expansion of the Bharat 6G Alliance from a small domestic initiative into a broad international coalition reflects India’s growing credibility. Its proposals are being considered by global standard-setting bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, demonstrating increasing influence in shaping future communication norms.
India’s strategy combines policy reform, spectrum planning, domestic R&D, and international collaboration to secure a decisive position in next-generation connectivity. Partnerships with global institutions, including the European Union’s 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association, and participation in major platforms like Mobile World Congress 2026 signal serious intent to integrate innovation with global harmonization. The country’s massive and fast-growing 5G user base further strengthens its practical leverage, positioning India not only as a large telecom market but as a standards contributor. This evolving role underscores a broader national objective: to influence how future digital infrastructure is designed, secured, and deployed worldwide while advancing inclusive and technologically sovereign growth.
