India Rejects Pakistan's Flood Allegations, Attributes Chenab River Surge to Heavy Monsoon Rains

India has categorically dismissed Pakistan's allegations that it deliberately caused flooding across the border by releasing excess water into the Chenab River. Calling the claims "baseless," "misleading," and unsupported by technical evidence, New Delhi has maintained that the rise in river levels was solely the result of exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall across the upper catchment areas. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also pointed out that Pakistan's own flood monitoring authorities had earlier attributed the increased water flow to intense rainfall, contradicting the allegations later made by sections of the Pakistani establishment and media.


The exchange comes at a time when large parts of South Asia are witnessing severe monsoon activity, with rivers swelling across India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. India Firmly Rejects the Allegations

Responding to Pakistan's accusations, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the allegations lacked any factual or technical basis. According to India, there was no deliberate release of water that could have caused flooding downstream. Instead, officials explained that heavy rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir and other upper catchment regions between July 20 and July 23 significantly increased the natural flow of the Chenab River.


India described the allegations as contrary to publicly available hydrological data and emphasized that seasonal surges in river discharge are common during the monsoon. The government maintained that the rise in water levels followed predictable weather patterns rather than any human intervention.


Pakistan's Own Flood Data Supports India's Position

One of the key points highlighted by the Indian government is that Pakistan's own Flood Forecasting Division had already issued advisories attributing the increased water flow to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas. These official bulletins warned of rising river levels due to continuing monsoon rains and projected that the water would gradually recede as rainfall subsided.


According to the MEA, these official assessments from Pakistan itself undermine later claims that India intentionally caused the flooding. By relying on Pakistan's own flood monitoring data, India argued that the allegations do not stand up to technical scrutiny.

The government stated that the recent rise in the Chenab River resulted from natural hydrological conditions caused by heavy rainfall and should not be confused with ongoing diplomatic issues concerning water-sharing arrangements.
